First let’s talk about Coquie del Mar. This was the first time I’ve been to Puerto Rico and not stayed on or near Ashford Ave., the ‘main drag’ along Condado Beach. Coqui del Mar is located close by, but in the Ocean Park/Santurce neighborhood. A bit of a walk to the Marriott, but doable or a 10 buck Uber trip with a generous tip. Often we would Uber out and walk back. The facility is clothing optional ON THE FIRST FLOOR ONLY. The 2nd floor has sight lines to the neighboring houses and a cover is required. It was clean, comfortable, and did I mention clothing optional? While the facility is gay owned/operated and tends to cater to gay men, it is an all welcoming facility. When we checked in there were 2 women nudists in the hot tub and they were wonderful. Please note that this is an ADULTS ONLY property, and it was nice to not have kids running around. Also note that our room was not made up for us each day, and when we needed towels we asked for them. I’m assuming this was due to Covid. Staff and guests were required to be fully vaccinated. Continental breakfast provided during the week, with a brunch on weekends. As for the staff and the owners, they were fantastic. While my travel buddy spoke fluent French, his Spanish was not so hot. Can’t navigate the Spanish prompts when you call for reservations? No problem, they are there to help. Need suggestions as to bars, clubs, beaches, drug stores, or just about anything else? Ask. OK, no place is perfect, so here is a bit of the bad. When we were checking in there was a drag event in progress and they were using our room as a green room and needless to say you can’t put drag queens on a schedule. No problem, they put aside our luggage, gave us a tour, we popped out for a bit and came back to a ready room with our luggage in it. Our room was small but quite comfortable complete with a fridge in the bedroom and a bidet in the bath. We stayed in the red room, but didn’t use the cross or the riding crops during our visit. Bottom line on the facility itself, I would not hesitate to recommend or stay again. The rates are good, the facility is clean and comfortable, and did I mention clothing optional on the first floor? I can’t speak for the other guests, but we felt like we were staying with friends. Now for the Gaycation. The staff at Coqui del Mar put together a package of events and day trips that occupied a good portion of our time. This also included a flight to Vieques and 2 nights at Casa de Amistad, and a ferry trip back. Casa de Amistad is gay owned/operated but is all welcoming. During our stay our group had the entire facility, so for 2 nights it was all gay, but not clothing optional. This was the first turnkey vacation I ever took and it included the Miss Gay Puerto Rico contest and associated events, tours, beach trips, 2 days at Casa de Amistad (Vieques), and numerous other activities. While we were supposed to go to the caves and rain forest, the caves were flooded and another event was substituted. I seem to recall a few events on our itinerary that didn’t happen, but I honestly don’t know if they were cancelled or we just didn’t go due to exhaustion, how important could it have been if I don’t even remember what they were? There was never a time where we said 'what are we going to do today?. My travel companion had never been to Puerto Rico, and this was a phenomenal first experience for him. I’ve been to San Juan many times, and much of it, specifically all of the beaches and the trip to Vieques were new to me as well. Suffice it to say, a good time was had by all and I would definitely take another vacation hosted and planned by Coqui del Mar. 2025.05.01 your hosts, Rob and V are permitting me to do my first internship during July and August. Many thanks for their help in me deciding what I want to do...
