TL;DR Sign up! Jean was great and delivered an unforgettable experience!
Our Rainforest Hiking “El Yunque” Waterfall Tour was a 10 out of 10. Signing up was easy via the website, and the automatic communications were informative. We went on a Monday, which made for smaller crowds. We signed up as a couple and were joined by another family of 5. This made us a group of 7, and we could make good pacing for the hike with the two guides.
Definitely heed all the warnings of not bringing your phone or any electronics (especially Apple Watches that unclasp easily) with you. You will get muddy, but lean into it! Very important: Closed. Toed. Shoes. While it might be tempting to wear sandals in the rainforest, the elements are slippery and muddy, so it is better to have good foot protection. Also, bring a change of clothes and shoes with you to leave in the van for after the hike. Again, trust their tips because it makes a difference.
While the scheduled time is set early, do it! You will appreciate it when you see the hordes of people who come after you. In other good news, you’ll get back early, so you can squeeze in another excursion or shop when you return. On the day of pick up, Jean rolled up in the group van to pick us up from Plaza Colón in Old San Juan. Jean navigated the (sometimes very narrow) roads expertly and did so while doing carpool karaoke along the way.
Again, avoid taking any electronics with you. It will get wet. Luckily, one of the significant value adds of their tour experience is that the duo will take many great pictures for you and airdrop them your way at lunch. Yes, that means it is easy for iPhones, so Android users inquire further about how to obtain the photos. They take them right in the action along with video footage, so you can let your phone stay put in the van with comfort and confidence.
Throughout the hike, they expertly navigate along the elements while discussing the terrain, flora, and fauna. They are easy to talk to and knowledgeable about the area. Locally cultivated, they are a great resource to learn more about PR broadly. It is also evident that they treasure relationships with other guides, and it was great to see the camaraderie with others. It made us feel comfortable and connected to see them maintain trust.
From the waterfall slide, cliff jump, rope swing, and mud face painting, they were there every step of the way. Drink water from the upper waterfall (so refreshing!), as you won’t get that chance later. The finale of the hike was a lovely fruit platter prepared by our fantastic guides and ample time to explore the remainder of the falls. By then, the crowds will have arrived, all with their phones in baggies, but the photo results in the end were well worth it.
With the hike behind us, we stopped by a roadside food stand to grab lunch on the way back. It was great seeing Jean behind the counter serving us up. Lots of great choices. Take their recommendations. All the food we had was well-seasoned and tasty. During lunch, Jean airdropped the photos from both phones. Again, because they are in the action along with us, they take far better pictures than we could have while trying to stay balanced and safe.
After the tour, Jean later went out of his way to offer us additional recs in San Juan. Thanks to his suggestion, we watched an EPIC all-female drum performance at La Terrazzo de Bonanza and had terrific rum tasting at Scryers Rum & Barrelhouse. These were two of our highlights during our four-day stay in Puerto Rico.
Overall, the hike was well worth the additional costs compared to other cheaper waterfall tours. It came down to three things: intentionality, personality, and hospitality. When you do things with other amazing humans, the results will likely exceed expectations, and these two rocked it for us. We can’t recommend them enough. Be good to PR and El Yunque by doing your part to keep your footprint clean to preserve it for others to experience its majesty. Hurry now, as they are one of the best-kept secrets of PR, and they won’t...
Read moreWe had a wonderful experience working with Salsa Tours. We took my parents to Puerto Rico for their 50th Anniversary, and Charlotte was accommodating and considered their age. She planned the most beautiful excursions but made sure beforehand that my parents could do them. We not only went on these fun experiences, but we also had many opportunities to dance salsa at these spectacular places. I couldn’t have asked for a better first-time experience for my parents in La Isla del Encanto. The entire staff was so kind and so helpful. They made an effort to get to know us on a personal level, and Charlotte aimed to better us (her students) inside and outside of dance. I also significantly improved my dancing skills. To say that I loved our experience from the beginning, middle, and end would be an understatement. We loved the sense of community and family and look forward to many more bookings with Salsa Tours in the...
Read moreAs our goodbye to PR, we did the 4:30pm salsa class with Charlotte at Playa Ocean Park yesterday. Charlotte is extremely personable, friendly and created a fun environment for the class. We danced on the beach overlooking the beautiful water. She taught us key steps for salsa, and as a bonus merengue and bachata. She taught us about musicality and learning how to count to ultimately stay on beat. She really tries to provide you as much value as possible in the time allotted. And then as a beautiful, kind touch - she went above and beyond to give the group a treat given it was the last class of the year - we all drank coquito and had some charcuterie. Very nice surprise! Charlotte is a wonderful, awarded professional dancer and even has a masters in dancing education. She is passionate about her craft. Strongly recommend...
