My husband was extremely excited to take us to his childhood vacationing spot in Old Forge This summer as we rarely get to spend quality family time together because he travels for work. He wanted to take the kids to enchanted safari, which he hadn’t been to since he was a teenager (he is 42 now) and neither I or the children had ever been. |We looked online and felt extremely excited about the McCauley Mountain suite we booked for three nights at The Waters Edge Inn.. I though it was a little off there were not more pictures of the rooms on the website but I didn’t think to far into it. We spent over $1100 for the room for three nights alone with passers to the water park for two days… which put us in an average of $330 per day just to be there. Arrival at the room was immediately disappointing for me. Neither of the telephones in the room worked, the room was horribly hot no air conditioning had been turned on and it was a very hot day… there is no elevator and I was dripping with sweat after unloading four peoples luggage and bringing them up the stairs. I went to start putting things away and opened the fridge to find it dirty and there was leftover food still inside.||I went to call the front seat and that is when I discovered neither phone worked. |I went to the desk where someone was helpful and came to clean it for us but I was just a little put out considering how much the room cost per evening. I’ve never paid that much for a room without too notch amenities and there was not even a coffee pot of keurig in the room.||Later on my son wanted to take a bath in the jacuzzi tub but we could not get the water much hotter than Luke warm no matter how much we spun the dial or waited.||The following day at the waterpark was terrible we arrived right at the opening of the day (10am) and by 1 pm we had made I through the lines to ride only 2 water slides…. We stopped into a pizza wing joint in the park to have lunch. We put our order in at 3 PM and at 4:15. I went to the counter to ask for our food because many people had ordered and left with their food before us. They had lost our ticket and we spent almost 2 hours just sitting there in the restaurant waiting for our food and then eating losing all of that time at the park as well, I went to the office when I return to the hotel and return the tickets that I had purchased for the following day because we were not impressed with the park… |I spent the entire day at the waterpark, completely dry and hot and annoyed so many people I’ve never seen lines that long and everything cost money if you wanna wait in line for tube and then wait in line once you get it that’s fine But you could rent to so that you could skip the waiting for for a tube line. They offered cups with “free” refills, but three refills were only free every certain amount of minutes if you want to get one and you were very thirsty and drink it right down and went to fill it again it would deny you or refill it would say you had to wait.|I’m not fully impressed with any part of this trip. My husband said He remembered it as a much more magical place, but I guess his children we do remember things differently I would spend my money elsewhere...
Read moreRead all the way till the end...there is a kicker in here. When I came to Old Forge I was excited as one usually is to experience the beauty of the area I remembered as a child. I am now from NC so we drove a very long way to be at a wedding for my niece. NY known for its class and customer service is as it usually was except for the Water's Edge. It was just off season so we weren't able to do Water Safari however this area holds charm beyond the water park. Lakes, streams and rivers, just the drive up the mountain is beautiful. However, when we finally reached the Water's Edge what we expected in a $300/night hotel was sorely lacking. They charged per person which is unheard of. First the room was small and cramped with a staircase that was barely big enough for a person to walk up. The bed comfort was horrible. and the beautiful lake view was ruined with horrible looking boats and fairies. When I talked to the staff they seemed accommodating but offered me a room that was in the basement {bottom floor (A1)}. It smelled like mold, was smaller than the one I originally booked. Then she tried to sell me into a "2 bedroom" where one of the "rooms" did not have a wall on it. A bit nicer but for 385.00 still not enough!!! We settled for the room we asked for and sucked it up. Our family likes to make the best of a bad situation and canceling the booking was not an option. It seems as though the place had not been updated, renovated or at the least maintained since it was built, god only knows how long ago. Again the room was musty and smelled. It really was a room for 2 people and was not luxury at all. Then we checked out the pool area. A small pool with little to offer, again musty and dirty. Then I went into the sauna I sat down hoping to find a beautiful place to find some happy peace. I turned it on and stepped inside, sat down and as the room started heating up, I looked up and on the edge of the door jam, there was a roach...yup, no joke, a roach!!!! I about flew out of that hotel, but once again could not cancel my reservation. When I went to the wedding, more bad news, my daughter started the jets on the tub and brown, dirty water came out. In addition, my daughter and son had to stay at the hotel, my daughter went to take a nap in the loft (She's 17) and when she got up, slipped and her knee got caught in the rungs on the stairs, she dropped my computer and it broke. The carpet was rounded on the edge of the tiny little steps and she slid on the edge and fell. Management was not there so I waited until Monday to call. Management did not say much else except that they would "look into it". First of all, doubting a customer is horrible customer service, regardless of the situation, an agency should (especially at the report of roaches) just give a discount. I have stayed at many hotels and I know good hotels and bad and my friends this one was bad. The best it has to offer is that it is an overpriced roof over your head. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE!!! I am so glad it was only a one night stay and the next time I go to old forge I'll skip the pricey hotel and stay in a cabin, the accommodations and cleanliness are far...
Read moreI originally booked this hotel about 3-4 weeks in advance over the phone and they seemed nice then. The day before my arrival June 23, 2018 I called to see if I could change my reservation to the following weekend due to a family conflict; the person was very rude on the phone and said “that’s our policy and there is nothing I can do for you” I then called back to see if I could talk to the manager and I was told the general manager was not on that weekend and I already talked to the acting manager that was on that night then once again I was told “there is nothing I can do for you due to the policy and having a booked hotel.” I kept my reservation because I didn’t want to lose out on the money that I already paid for the room which was over $200 for the one night. I arrived that morning around 12 and the lady that was at the front desk was not accommodating at all and was very rude. It was a rainy day and I was told “no you can not check in early” so I asked what there was to do around town that was indoors and I got this; with a very rude demeanor “ well there is the movie theatre” then I asked what there was for a little kid (my child is 2) then once again in a rude demeanor “wellll there is the water park, arcade, and movie theatre” I didn’t even respond back to her because I was taken back from her rude demeanor at the front desk. If I’m not mistaken Old Forge is a tourist attraction due to water safari. I’m sure these women deal with families on a daily basis; if I were the manager I would be very disappointed in the way they were treating the guests. I have worked in a hotel before as a front desk agent and if I acted like this towards any of our guests I would have been fired or something else would have been done. I was not satisfied with this stay at all and I will not be returning. Oh and I was also told that day that they had vacancy....so they weren’t even booked. I had to keep my reservation and come without my father because he was unable to attend due to a work conflict; I didn’t want to cancel all I wanted to do was move my reservation so my whole family could attend with us. I will be looking to stay someplace else due to this experience and I do not recommend...
