I own share in IHG. As a share holder you would think that the “mortgage” I pay monthly to use this point service would be worth better hotels. I have used points in the past and my stay was great. However, I booked 3rd party this time because it was cheaper than using my points. This hotel is always HOT like there’s no A/C it’s June in VB and the last thing people want is to wait in a long line for service in a hot hotel. I had my three children in with me at this last stay and I’m pregnant undergoing immuno-therapy. This hotel never had enough staff at the front and it takes forever to check in and check out. Today they assigned me to a room and it was DISGUSTING. I wouldn’t even let my baby get out of his seat after being in the car FIVE hours to crawl around. Let’s first talk about how a motel 6 has better quality rooms than this room. I found bloody boogers smeared all over the wall, there was what looked like tar or black residue on the wall near the table, the tables and fixtures were all NASTY, blood stains in the carpet, burn marks in the bathroom, holes in the walls, and a cockroach was STUCK in my blinds. I called and told them the room was gross. They sent someone in within 10 mins for them to think the room was vacant and walk out. 30 min later ANOTHER cleaning lady came in and tried to clean the walls and stuff but it wouldn’t “come up” it was concrete and black paint she claims but there was no black paint in the room and the other sections came up just fine. However, after he asking if there was anything else.. I was already annoyed, hot and grossed out I went to go look outside the window and looked up and there was a whole cockroach stuck in the curtains. A COCKROACH. I spent over $150 for this room & $50 incidental.. to be told the third party has to refund me. They won’t because they said they don’t guarantee the quality of rooms even when this room is a whole health and safety hazard! I ended up calling my bank to dispute these charges and had to pay last minute 2x the price for a hotel for me and my 3 children to stay last minute. When I went to check out I told her about the roach and how I’m undergoing therapy for cancer. The front desk manager got a bit snooty and told me to call once again the third party and they will refund me. But that’s besides the point. The air conditioning unit in that room also was COVERED in what looked like black mold. The room smelt musky and like smoke. I fully plan on contacting the share holders in this case cause none of it was okay. Also, when I was leaving the cleaning lady that tried to clean the room asked if I was happy with my stay I was there a whole hour into checking in and walking out with my belongings and children. When I told her about the roach after she had left she said “well was it alive or dead?” Does that matter? That’s unsanitary especially for someone being treated for cancer PREGNANT with three small children. I have never been more disgusted with a whole stay, service, and over all experience. I will never stay here again and it’s not worth even $100 per night. It is GROSS. Do not stay here if you have kids or standards for a good or decent hotel.

Before I start my review, I want to preface with the fact that I love Holiday Inn and I have been to many branches, but this one was the worst one I’ve ever been to in my entire life. Let’s start with the outside. Nice looking hotel, looks great from the outside, including the lobby. When you enter the rooms, you are first hit with a mildew/moldy smell. (Note: it was pouring so I understood why it may be like this.) The tub was dirty and the towels were not the cleanest. The sink also sprays you. There were also lots of sketchy men in the hotel, which was nerve racking knowing that we brought a lot of young girls with us. But that was not the worst thing. We were there for a church conference so almost 400 people came all over the country to this hotel to be a part of this youth conference. Almost 10 people got bit by bed bugs and unfortunately I had an allergic reaction to the bites (which led me going to the ER). On top of that, after their room was cleaned, my friends met a pile of small hair (looked like pubic hair) in their sink. Others had no working AC in their rooms and some never got their room cleaned over the 4 nights we were there. We ordered rooms with queen beds and given rooms with a king bed and pull out couch mattress for 4 people to share. I know you’re thinking why didn’t I say anything to the hotel management, I did! I even met the manager who personally told me “let me know if you need anything” on the first night. But due to the volume of people in the hotel and the ongoing construction (strings of carpets and construction tools were left lying around), they could not move my room so I requested them to deep clean my room and change the sheets at least. They also failed to do that…. So I would think twice before bringing your family here or staying here for even a night.

I had the king suite sofa bed.

Pros:

Nice shower (walk-in, ample space, good water pressure, real tile).

Bed was comfortable.

Lots of space.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room had a nice dining table with four chairs and a large sofa.

Location is centrally located for the Hampton Roads area with lots of businesses close by and easy access to major roadways.

Cons:

The fridge was in a cabinet and wasn't working so I had to pull it out to see if maybe it was unplugged. It was. It actually appeared to be brand new. Still had packaging material in it but a little odd that it smelled of food. My guess is the last guest didn't realize it wasn't working. It was a little challenging to reach behind the cabinet to plug it in.

I was there for four nights. My key stopped working after the second night. The hotel is huge, and I was literally in the farthest room from the front desk and was carrying many items. I called on my cell phone and they said to come to the front desk. I told them I had physical limitations, so they sent someone who let me in but did not bring new keys. SMH. Couldn't leave my room until they brought new keys, but they were fairly quick about it.

I had to visit three floors (there are four) because none of the ice machines were working. It wasn't until I got to the last floor that there was a note on the ice machine that because of the renovations you had to go to the front desk to get ice. Again, I was as far as I could be from the front desk. They kindly brought me ice when I asked but this was an inconvenience for me and them (plus I felt I had to give a big tip which each person initially declined until I insisted).

The welcome letter provided at check-in had a QR code for a digital directory. It did not work. No books or manuals in the room either. Would have been nice to see what the restaurant had to offer, or what their hours were, without having to go there. I never went because of the distance from my room.

The room was so big that there was a lot of wasted space. Seems like it could have been arranged better. For instance, the desk was in a corner with no light fixtures or lamp. The sofa bed was against a wall that made the angle to watch TV difficult. The closet was in the foyer which was furthest from the bathroom and sleeping area.

The building itself seemed older and definitely could use the updates so it will be interesting to visit once the renovation is complete. The grounds could use attention. I didn't use the pool so can't comment about that.

I visit Virginia Beach often and will try this hotel again after the renovation is complete but will insist my room is close to the...

This was one of the worst Holiday Inns that my family and I have stayed in. Upon our arrival on July 7th, after a long trip into the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area, we checked in, went to our room, and we were disappointed in the cleanliness and overall appearance of the room. Furniture was worn and outdated. I started to clean the room on my own with lysol wipes, and it was black. The entire room wasn't properly cleaned before our arrival. The front desk moved us to a new room. The 2nd room we were moved to, the carpet was soaked by the Air Conditioner so we notified the front desk immediately, and they moved us to another room! SO finally after such a switch around, we had our room. The general cleanliness of the whole hotel was not good (Ie: Elevators, Windows, Filled Garbage Cans outside that were overflowing), the cleanliness and the appearance of the facility was such a downer. I chose Holiday Inn this location because of the price and the outdoor pool. I didnt use the outdoor pool so I cant comment on that. I would like commend the front desk staff because they tried their best to remedy the situation and apologized. They even gave us 1 night free based on our horrendous experience in this hotel trying to find a room. The hotel is run down, and my next part of the review is for the Housekeeping Staff. The Housekeeping Staff of this Holiday Inn does such a poor job with the overall housekeeping, upkeep of this facility. Throughout our stay here at this hotel, the Housekeeping Staff didnt even clean our room (ie: make beds, change garbage, give us new towels) without us notifying the front desk. The front desk was aware of the poor Housekeeping Services at this hotel. The performance that I observed of certain housekeeping staff of this establishment is abysmal. Very disgusted by Housekeeping of this Hotel. My family and I enjoy staying at Holiday Inns throughout the United States, but I would never recommend this Holiday Inn in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk vicinity. With such an awful housekeeping team responsible for the cleaning of this hotel, I would like to leave a positive comment for the front desk team- as they were the only positives for me personally for staying here at this hotel. The only staff in this establishment that knew how to provide Customer Service!! I also noticed several Housekeeping Team Members when they should have been cleaning, most of them were on the...
