Because of the host - Perfume, I really want to say we loved this place, but Perfume really is the only thing propping it up that is otherwise quite poor and massively over priced.||Perfume is a truly lovely person. So kind and friendly and welcoming. She has a permanent smile and is always going above and beyond to help you out. She will put herself out just to help you however she can at no benefit to her. Because of her, I feel bad for the review but a wonderful person can't undo a bad hotel.||The location is amazing.||However, the rest of the hotel and stay is a bit of a disaster and at about £35 per night, it's unbelievably over priced.||The rooms are very very bad. Botched paint work, bare wires, missing bulbs, broken shower, leaking sink, mouldy fridge, 1 pillow each, in desperate need of decorating. For £10 per night I've experienced much much better high quality stays, so £35 per night for these rooms is quite odd.||When people smoke in the alleyway, the smoke comes straight up into the room.||Currently (late december) they have building works next door that start before 8am and use industrial drills and lump hammers that vibrate through the room and with ear plugs in is still exceptionally loud.||The host can turn your power off from outside the room so if you leave your work laptop plugged in uploading files whilst you go and get a coffee, you come back to your power having been isolated, laptop dead and failed upload for work.||We were kindly invited to a family meal on Christmas day by our host, but she spent the whole meal shouting into her phone before excusing herself and leaving us at the table.||The hot water doesn't last long enough for 2 people to shower. So you have to pick who showers at night and who showers in the morning.||The WiFi router was actually inside our room and even still it was terrible.||The wall mounted TV was non functional and looked like just a place to put the WiFi router on top of.||The breakfast would be wonderful for 1 morning. But it's the same every day and you choose ONE of either eggs OR pho OR pancakes then you get coffee or juice etc. Once you've had 1 of each option for each morning, you're back to the beginning again.||For some reason a vietnamese woman shouts, screams and cries almost every night just outside the hotel.||The directions to the hotel are very weird and convoluted when actually it's so simple. Forget the weird alleyway stuff and the alternative number to get dropped off at. It's number 81C and you walk straight into the travel shop which is...

Because of the host - Perfume, I really want to say we loved this place, but Perfume really is the only thing propping it up that is otherwise quite poor and massively over priced.

Perfume is a truly lovely person. So kind and friendly and welcoming. She has a permanent smile and is always going above and beyond to help you out. She will put herself out just to help you however she can at no benefit to her. Because of her, I feel bad for the review but a wonderful person can't undo a bad hotel.

The location is amazing.

However, the rest of the hotel and stay is a bit of a disaster and at about £35 per night, it's unbelievably over priced.

The rooms are very very bad. Botched paint work, bare wires, missing bulbs, broken shower, leaking sink, mouldy fridge, 1 pillow each, in desperate need of decorating. For £10 per night I've experienced much much better high quality stays, so £35 per night for these rooms is quite odd.

When people smoke in the alleyway, the smoke comes straight up into the room.

Currently (late december) they have building works next door that start before 8am and use industrial drills and lump hammers that vibrate through the room and with ear plugs in is still exceptionally loud.

The host can turn your power off from outside the room so if you leave your work laptop plugged in uploading files whilst you go and get a coffee, you come back to your power having been isolated, laptop dead and failed upload for work.

We were kindly invited to a family meal on Christmas day by our host, but she spent the whole meal shouting into her phone before excusing herself and leaving us at the table.

The hot water doesn't last long enough for 2 people to shower. So you have to pick who showers at night and who showers in the morning.

The WiFi router was actually inside our room and even still it was terrible.

The wall mounted TV was non functional and looked like just a place to put the WiFi router on top of.

The breakfast would be wonderful for 1 morning. But it's the same every day and you choose ONE of either eggs OR pho OR pancakes then you get coffee or juice etc. Once you've had 1 of each option for each morning, you're back to the beginning again.

I cannot give this homestay a good review. At first, the owner seemed friendly and welcoming. We booked a room for 3 nights and everything seemed fine. Then on the second day, as we were out travelling, we were unknowingly kicked out of our hotel room.

We had unpacked all of our luggage with the expectation that we would be there for 3 nights and after just one night, we had  strangers going into our room, rummaging through all of our personal belongings, and throwing them into bags to be moved out. The owner's only excuse was "I'm sorry, I forgot that someone else already booked your room." We should have been told AT LEAST the night before or the morning it happened (she wished us a good day in the morning that we were kicked out - no idea that we would later be kicked out...)

We received no refund and no compensation. While we were out, our luggage was moved to another hotel on another street (owned by the previous hotel's family member or friend) and we were forced to stay in a much smaller, dirtier room with no working Internet. The owner said she tried to contact us via email but of course we didn't receive this while out travelling. Worst of all, we had no idea that any of this happened until arriving back at the hotel at 9pm after a long day expecting to have a nice shower. We were greeted by being told we have to move. Absolutely unacceptable practice for a hotel/homestay manager. She should have accepted the blame and compensated either us or the other people who had booked the room but instead she took money from both parties and sneakily moved us out with no monetary loss to her business.

If you don't want to be kicked out without your knowledge or if you don't like staff entering your room and looking through your personal belongings without your permission, I advise anyone to stay away...

I really like the spaciousness of our room. We stayed in a 3 bed room with ensuite bathroom. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom well equipped with towels, shampoo, toilet paper, tooth brushes and even a disposable razor. Breakfast was includes and ordered à la carte, ie there were several options (western style with toast and jam, eggs poached, scrumbled etc) and several drinks (coffee, tea, juice) which I think was amazing considering the very reasonable price per night. Laundry was optional, also tourist agency services were available at the home stay but we used neither. The location in bit of a quiet corner of the buzzing Old Town was great in my opinion. Endless options for restaurants and cafés can be reached within walking distance. Nothing much to complain about. Two details one might want to be aware of in advance: -Room nr 206 had no sunlight due to the fact that the window was blocked so it couldn’t actually be opened, which is always a bit of a shame. -The layout of the building is set up in way that the rooms are all connected the one main staircase and are separated only by a fairly thin glass door. So if you are sensitive to both some occasional sounds from the neighbours on their way down or up the staircase or if you can’t help but need a pitchblack room to sleep in, you’d want to make sure you bring a sleeping mask and earplugs. Very nice home stay with a lovely family in the most popular part of town.

My best piece of travel advice is, “don’t pick the hotel, pick the host.” Staying with Perfume at Hanoi Family Homestay is the perfect example of why. Her energy and warmth surround her guests from even before check in to well after (she’s STILL helping my friend and me navigate a month-long trip through Viêt Nam, booking hotels and transportation for us!). From offering great deals on excursions to hopping on a scooter herself to zip us to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for us, help us with, improve for us. She was raring to take us through the Old Quarter by night on her scooter, but we were wiped from the day. She invited us to join her family for a delicious dinner, happily accommodating my vegetarianism, and offered us food, water, beer — whatever — whenever we breezed through. The homestay is in an ideal location, close to all but tucked into an alley so it’s quiet. Our room (two double beds) was comfortable and had the nice addition of a small fridge. The breakfasts were delicious and available whenever we wandered down. It’s nice to think that if I ever come back to Viet Nam — and I want to — I’ll have a friend. If you stay here, you will too. Perfume will be one of the biggest highlights of my month in this beautiful country. Thank you for everything. Highly recommended (obviously).
