There are baristas. And then there’s Tuan (and his sidekick Khanh). But before I fangirl all over Tuan and Khanh, let me give you a brief history on Vietnamese coffee: Bread, beer and beef weren’t the only tasty ways the French colonists left their mark in Vietnam. Although the French may have introduced this morning tradition, the Vietnamese made coffee their own by recreating the french press into the Phin, drenching some versions in condensed milk and throwing an egg in there (why not 🤷🏻♀️🍳?!). It’s strong, as f*%k, naturally sweet, and quite possibly the best coffee I’ve ever had. Who am I kidding?! It’s the best coffee I’ve ever had. I don’t drink coffee regularly, but I do appreciate a quality cup. Lately, I’ve been doing some appreciating on the daily. My tastebuds have indulged in some of the more popular offerings: Coconut Coffee: black coffee with a slushee of coconut cream and condensed milk. Yea, it’s as good as it sounds. The one at Dream Beans is sweet, but the coffee flavor still dominates, unlike some of the other ones I’ve tried. So smooth. Egg Coffee: You HAVE to try it. Even if your vegan. Trust me. But my favorite way to enjoy Vietnamese coffee is traditional Phin style, black, no milk, no sugar. One morning at a local cafe, I noticed it was only men sipping on my Phin drink of choice. When I asked my server why, she replied “It’s a man drink”. In a sense, it is. Served in a short glass, it gives you that ‘I’m drinking hard liquor at 9 in the morning’ feeling. It’s not just the coffee I love. It’s the whole experience. And when I discovered Dream Beans Coffee in the heart of Hanoi, my Vietnam coffee experience elevated. Tuan, owner of Dream Beans Coffee, is the most passionate barista I’ve ever encountered. His main man Khanh is just as enthusiastic. Step into their coffee lab, and they’ll meticulously demo and walk you through their traditional process. There’s a stopwatch and scale involved... The love and passion they pour into every cup goes straight to the veins and into the heart. You must come. The coffee culture in Hanoi is one of the many, MANY things I love about this city. It’s real. It’s raw. It’s heart racing. It’s...
Read moreI was recommended as so many others on TripAdvisor to this caffe, and it had a 5 star (highest rank) and it do not make it justice. Mostly because I tried some other 5 star in the area and I found this superior. I walked in there a Monday afternoon when the sun was gazing in the summer month of Hanoi. At first encounter with Tuan (Batista) was we welcoming into a well very simple yet beautiful room, and on the cherry on top the cake, it was cold and enjoyable compared to the outside. As soon as we sat down was we handed the menu, and just as fast was he with recommendation. Needless to say, best cofee I ever had in Vietnam was suggested to me and a smoothie to my girlfriend that also was top class. ( I had a cofee with egg in it) We chatted abit and he has a very good sense how to balance the cofee and I would recommend you to ask him what ideas he have when it comes go making the cofee, you will notice he his very enthusiastic and dedicated to the art of making coffee. The cofee was so good that when I had a day over in Hanoi by accident, one of the few things I really wanted to redo was to try another cofee from this place(this time a coccunat coffe) Do I have to say it was just as good? And i highly recommend you to try it a hot summer month! Tuna! You are an amazing person and I wish you and your wife all the luck in the future. And hopefully...
