I’m absolutely devastated by the damage caused to my hair, but even more so by how I was treated after raising my concerns. My hair used to be so thick I couldn’t gather it into one hand — now it’s limp, fine, and still falling out. I’ve never experienced this level of breakage before.
I was very clear during the consultation that I wanted a balayage with dimensional tones to make my curls pop. I specifically said I didn’t want any brassiness and went over that several times. The pictures I took the following day speak for themselves. From that point, my hair just began to deteriorate.
When I reached out to Tommy, I wasn’t met with support or help. I was told things like: “Well, what do you want me to do about it?” and “If you’re not happy with the colour I’ve provided, just go back to your natural colour and don’t lighten your hair.” “If I were you, I’d think my hair colour is amazing.” I wasn’t invited in for him to assess my hair or offered any treatments. Instead, the blame was placed on everything but his own work: my products, previous hairstyles, and even the way I messaged him.
There was no strand test done before the highlift and bleaching. After consulting with other professionals, I’ve learned that skipping this step — especially on curly and textured hair — can absolutely cause the kind of damage I’m now dealing with. I’ve had to go to other hairdressers to try and stop the breakage and get the right treatments, because I was not given any real aftercare advice. Eventually, he suggested I buy shampoo and conditioner from his salon — priced at over $250 — after I’d already spent $700 on the service. These products weren’t enough anyway, especially when my hair clearly needed protein and bond-repairing treatments.
What’s made this so much harder is the complete lack of care. I was made to feel like a burden for sending detailed messages — I was told, “You need to rein it in and realign with realistic expectations” and “The length of your messages is making me feel quite uncomfortable.” This was after I explained how anxious and unconfident I felt, that my hair was falling out, and that I needed to document everything because I didn’t have an email address to contact him. But that seemed to be his only concern — not the actual damage, or how upset I was.
I’ve taken pictures of the breakage — hair all over the bathroom floor, a brush full of it, breakage all around my edges, and my crown completely snapped. I’m still trying to come to terms with how much hair I’ve lost.
This review isn’t something I do lightly. I’ve never left a negative one before, but I wouldn’t want anyone else to go...
