The Food
We’ve been eager to try Aunty Lucy’s Burgers ever since a good friend of ours recommended them. We ordered the Accra Burger and The Nima (a limited time offer chicken burger), an order of fries and a coke. Then it was off to a nearby park for a Covid-lockdown take out picnic.
The Nima sandwich was fabulous. The deep fried chicken thigh was hot and crisp and juicy - and not at all oily. And the toppings were super fresh. This is an excellent sandwich that we hope they make a regular menu item.
The Accra Burger has delicious, juicy meat patties and the same fresh toppings. But we were a bit disappointed in the bun. The bottom half was already beginning to disintegrate when we opened the package (and we got the order fresh from the kitchen and opened the take-away only a few minutes later) and even the top half of the bun was challenged to contain the patties and toppings. This burger would benefit from a more robust bun for sure.
In both cases we would order their house made Shito Sauce to spice things up a bit. This is something we would definitely do on our next visit.
The fries were really good; hot and crispy and tasty - not over salted/spiced like so many fries are these days. And the portion is HUGE (could have easily served three, perhaps even four, people) - great value for money there. And while we’d definitely order them again the next time we visit we’ll order the Ghanaian sides: jollof rice and kelewele.
Service
This is a bit hard to evaluate during lockdown. But what we can say is that the person we met when we picked up our order was super friendly. The sense we get is that their space would be very warm and welcoming when dine-in becomes an option again.
Price
Total cost of our very filling lunch (we ate a 2:30 pm and only felt the need to have a light snack at 9:00 pm!) was $37.00, inclusive of taxes and tip - a very fair price for the quality and quantity of the food.
Summary
We’ll be ordering from Aunty Lucy’s again, this time ensuring that we get their Shito sauce to add to the burgers and with traditional Ghanaian side dishes. We look forward to our...
Read morePlease note that this review is based entirely on the hamburger and fries option. I have compared and contrasted this meal with other hamburger offerings in the area. If you have come here looking for a chicken sandwich review this is not it.
I ordered a double patty burger ($12) and one small order of fries ($4). There was no combo on the menu that included a burger, fries, and drink which should of been my first red flag. The total cost of this meal was $18 including tax.
I was expecting a good sized burger and since the fries were a seperate order I was expecting more. What I got was essentially the same size as an A&W burger for almost twice the cost. There was nothing special about the burger and there was little to no seasoning so it tasted bland. There was a special sauce but I personally had trouble tasting it. The fries were better but like I had said before, it's A&W portions so just whatever fits in the little baggy they give you.
I don't know about the chicken sandwiches, which seemed to be more of the focal point of the menu and they included fries, however since Burger is in the title I feel like it is fair to judge this place on their burger offerings.
From my experience with the burgers I could pay the same price at the Works and get a full meal with a much tastier and larger burger, or save $4 and go to A&W and get the same sized meal with a drink as well. You could also go to any of the bars in the area and pay around $16-$20 to get a good burger and fries.
I understand covid has raised beef prices and has caused hardship upon restaurants but these hamburger prices are not competitive with other offerings in the area. This review is entirely based on the hamburger and fries as two seperate orders, if there had been a combo option I would not of cared about the size of the fries. However for $18 I was expecting more, either a noticeably tasty burger, or big portions, what I got was an experience lacking in both. I just don't feel like this burger fills any sort of burger niche that would make it worth buying over...
Read moreHave to echo others here re: freshness and temperature of the food. We ordered two burgers, rice and fried plantains. The rice was by far the best thing about this meal - tasted great, great flavours and wasn't greasy - two thumbs up. The fried plantains were over seasoned in my opinion. But the burgers, ugh. The burgers were room temperature when we got it. Happens, I get it, not a big deal because it's delivery. But when a burger comes with american cheese, the easiest melting cheese of all the cheeses, that hasn't melted into the patty you know that thing was cold when it went on. It was a solid square that was just sitting on top of the meat. I'll eat a cold burger any day because of travel and delivery, but a burger that obviously was not warm enough before it made it to the bun was... not something I enjoyed eating at all. In a place like Toronto where you have million burger places to chose from I wouldn't choose this place again. Which is a shame because I think they have some...
