Saturday Produce Market — Local services in Toronto

I shopped from ChocoSol St. Lawrence Boutique yesterday, the chocolates are delicious but they’re all marked weirdly and they end up charging a whole lot more than we think and honestly I felt cheated once I got home! They have regular and premium chocolates which aren’t marked respectively. The woman explains the costing of everything so fast that you barely have anytime to understand. There’s only 2 people attending the customers. We never received a bill explaining the quantities, we were charged for a plastic bag for the open chocolates which they anyway have to give us (because how else do you want me to carry a non-packaged chocolate?). A panoply of local veg and fruit, meats and cheeses, and simply a sensual delight to walk in early Saturday before it kicks off ( get there before 7 for best selections everywhere). There’s certainly some unique offerings vegetable-wise though past few years do see multiple vendors offering exact same varietals of in season produce - I know it’s what sells but it’s be nice to see some really special stuff too . Samosa vendor in the south east corner not to be missed. Cheese vendor sells cheese that will make you weep with joy. Best eggs are right in the middle of the layout. Strudel baker in north east...

I like the Saturday farmer's market and miss some of the old vendors that no longer sell here. However, my dad -- a descendent of North American plantation slavery -- also shops here and the sweet potatoes he brings home are often infected with black rot. I feel this propagates prejudice, when a person who knows better pays for produce infested by the pathogens of this continent's latest immigrants. As less and less of our sweet potatoes are edible (albeit miraculously salable) I guess we'll just make a spectacle of our country, our farmers and ourselves. Hakim...
