I went on Monday morning right at open. The service was very quick and efficient. Nadia (who I believe was doing the intake) actually helped me fill in the form when I was in line, told me which documents to show the clerk, and was one of the most efficient ServiceOntario workers I've ever encountered. Lilian was helpful and quick as well, finishing my transaction in less than 3 minutes. The service here was definitely exceptional compared to what I'm used to at Service Ontario.
There is one thing to note about this location that soured the experience: the landlord does not allow lineups outside the storefront, and the capacity within is subject to fire code limitations (the actual waiting area is quite small), so not everyone who shows up the in the morning can get in. The solution for this was that Nadia would take the names of people who could not wait inside, and advise them to return at a later time (~9:30-10:00) when the line had shortened, promising to honour their times (presumably by letting them cut the line). There were several confrontations with unhappy customers, who were given explanations like "there is not enough capacity", "you cannot wait inside because of distancing with other customers for their safety", "you cannot wait inside because you are too close to the front desk where I sit".
This isn't Nadia's fault or anyone working at Service Ontario. However, might I suggest that all that's needed is to be up front with the customer and tell them about the landlord's requirements and the fire code, and therefore the real reason why some people who have lined up are being turned away, which is to avoid potential consequences on those fronts, rather than "customer safety" or "capacity...
Read moreThe implementation of having an appointment system really improves the experience. I was able to check in with one of the employees and stand in a separate line with those who did not book an appointment. The employee made sure to only have those who arrived close to their appointment time stay in line so don't come too early or you'll have to walk around and come back closer to your appointment time. I can't speak to the experience of coming without an appointment but most definitely you would not be prioritized if there are many appointments booked throughout the day so I highly recommend booking an appointment, especially a few days in advance if you are only available a certain day. Overall, I think it was organized and they are implementing the system well. I wasn't able to get the name of the employee managing the lines but I would like to thank her for doing a good job! (Edit: I found out her name was Rania since I had to return again to renew my health card and she served me efficiently and courteously at the counter to help me so do!)
