A gem disguised as a dried-seafood store..
I have driven pass this place a million times- always thought it is amongst one of the traditional dried seafood shops.
Man.. it must be the very few places left in Hong Kong that still serve dim sum on a cart, using traditional dim sum cards and stamps…
Great choice if you want to experience the truly local format of dim sum . Not so great of a choice if you are looking for fancy looking dumplings or super attentive service - again, it’s just not how traditional tea house work.
For those who have never been to places like this before:
*It is completely normal to be seated with other people at the same table, if you have a small party. This is a very common custom called ‘搭台’ and how people back in the days hang out. This is still practiced at some local restaurants as well. If it is quiet feel free to ask if you can have your own table - but best not to force it on a Sunday morning at 10am.
*Service will not be as attentive as modern restaurants. Doesn’t mean it is not good, just different. These are aunties and uncles, people who have been working there for years and years, serving grandpas and grandmas who have been visiting there for years and years. Feel free to ask about how things work and how to order, my experience is they will be more than happy to show you all the dishes available and teach you how the traditional ways of ordering works.. -but don’t get annoyed if your tea pot stays empty for less than 5 minutes or no one comes over to ask you how was the food. Open the lid and place it on the side, someone will see it and come over to take care of you.
*Dim sum is served until 4pm. If you are looking for variety and fresh food, go early. If you are unsure, call them before you go. Don’t go at 3:30pm and complain that they don’t have much to offer.
This is a 5 star place if you are looking for an EXPERIENCE.
Much better choices elsewhere if food and service is on top...
Read moreThis as authentic as you can get for a noisy, bustling, brash, classic Cantonese dim sum place. Do support them with your visit to help them continue. Everyone here is senior in age, including the dim sum pushcart ladies, the male service staff and the patrons. They are loud, direct and no-nonsense people - in a good way, they meant no harm, its a culture of the bygone years of Cantonese residents of Hong Kong.
I totally enjoyed the classic dim sum here; they are as authentic as I could remember. My favorite here is the steam beef balls, mixed with the right balance of orange peel to accentuate the fragrance.
You will be issued a card where the pushcart ladies will stamp on when you order the dim sum from their cards, so don't lose the card ... a little bit like Marche. When you are ready to leave, just bring the card to the counter and pay up.
Try to be early, they opened at 6:30am, and if you are either alone or with only one other, be prepared to share a table with the other senior patrons.
And if you are looking at the photo of the writing that I posted, it basically says, in summary:
粤菜精华在此楼 六安居内品珍馐 满堂佳客流霞醉 午夜梦回滋味留
The essence of Cantonese cuisine is in this building The delicacies are served here at "Luk On Kui" A full house of guests is all intoxicated The taste of the food is left in their dreams at midnight
I can't make out the name of the calligrapher, I trust that he must be a popular food...

here former name was #蓮香樓。 as per their old boss retired. the old waiter and waitress want keep their wages and want to continue this place. but the old boss was not real boss, just a brother of the real boss who own the traditional name 蓮香樓,but not allowing to run with this name. therefore they had to give it up and started a new name 六安居。 they believe we had safe in six way. i dont know which six and hope this will help running this place. its a kind of superstition from olds.
cut the bull-sheeting, the staffs are all 70+ ... very bad at listening. they still keeping the 30s old way cart pushing dimsum. people need to get out to get their food and stamp on the card given. if the food are too popular. they will be grabbed by other before the cart come to your table. thats why people are walking around seeking food.
plus. there is zero service... if u are tourist u dont know how to find seat. u need find by yourself. no one can help... u sit down. they will prepare tea. u food will come. if u cant sit down you will standing like stupd and watching people eat.
overall. very unique serving style. only tourist love it. seats are narrow. place are dirty... food are good. old taste and 100% hand made.
hmmmmmm will come back
