My third time visiting TMK. Was initially pleasantly surprised by the food (in terms of portions and quality of some dishes), but the rest of the experience was quite terrible:
When I arrived and told them my reservation (which was made in advance), the receptionist seemed rude and questioned me several times if I had actually made the booking. The manager (or at least whom I thought was the manager) then came out and said we’d need to wait 10 minutes because there’s been some delay (he was nice and offered us some sake).
We (party of 4) were then sat on a tiny counter table right at the staircase that is next to the reception table (facing the entrance). Apparently a party of 20 booked up the place so those were the only seats available. I’ve never sat on such uncomfortable counter tables before - I don’t understand why it was designed for 4. It also made it extremely difficult to get staff’s attention (whether for water or to follow-up on dishes).
Throughout the meal, the waitresses who were serving us were inexplicably rude. They were in a rush to serve (when it was difficult to make space on such a tiny rectangular table) and seemed annoyed whenever we asked for water or tried to follow-up on dishes that were taking an unreasonably long time.
The dessert was supposed to be “popping icecream” (part of the restaurant week menu), but they informed us at the end of the main course that they ran out of popcorn, so it would just be plain icecream. I don’t understand why I should be paying the same amount of money for less food. Shouldn’t you at least replace the popcorn with something?
And now comes the worst part: look at the photo. This is the “icecream” that I was served. It was already completely melted when it arrived at our table (without any utensils given to us). When we asked for them to be replaced, the waitress(es) seemed annoyed again.
When we simply wanted to leave the restaurant (because of how terrible the experience had become), it was so difficult to wave down staff for the bill that we had to wait for at least 15 minutes. I was very disappointed and so I asked to speak with the manager (who turned out to be a different guy from the one we talked to at the beginning) - Ash - who gave us a 15% discount on the bill.
I genuinely did not expect this kind of experience dining at a Pirata Group restaurant. I have always been a loyal Pirata customer, and this experience is the most disappointing one to date, especially considering the fact that it was a birthday celebration...
Read moreWhen friends talk about a boozy brunch, it’s usually about $500HKd or almost $1000HKd. Who could have thought that an all you can drink lunch costs less than $200hkd in Sheung Wan?
Look at how cool the door handle is, this wrench will take us to a different world, entering the world of rock n roll. Walkin up the stairs, you can see the giraffiti and stickers on the wall, then you can see this giant beauty behind the window.
A whole motobike is in display. How cool is that? Haha feel like I should have a leather jacket or kore piercings on my body to match the atmosphere in here.
Their lunch menu is $148/$168 depends on whether u want a 2courses or 3courses meal. We opt for the 2 courses plus free flow, which costs $205 in total only, such a bargain!
Their free flow alcohol choices include red, white, sake and Prosecco. I had about 4 glasses of Prosecco and 1 glass of sake.
For starters, we have the Karaage chicken and Wagyu Tataki.
Karaage Chicken Deep fried chicken pieces, they are perfectly cooked. The chicken remains very dry on the outside but a moist inside. Chicken skin is deep fried to push all oil out, so really taste like crisps. The chicken is well seasoned on its own but the spicy yogurt is a star on top!
Wagyu Tataki The wagyu beef is thinly sliced. Each slice is served with a fried garlic and pickled shallot. The sauce is light, kind of like a yuzu soya sauce and vinegar, which is wont overpower the star of the dish!
Katsu San It’s kind of like a poke bowl, a meat and all different vegetables in a rice bowl.
West Coast The portion is very generous, huge in size, it will feed a guy’s stomach for sure.
All the ingredients play a part in the whole rice bowl and it compliments each other’s existence. The rice bowl gives a satisfactory feeling to this meal. At the same time, jt’s very healthy!
I love the staff as well, they are so polite and friendly, taking time to explain the menu/dishes with us, giving us recommendations, very great service! Will definitely come...
Read moreVery disappointed. I had heard many good reports about TMK, but my experience is a complete mismatch. The concept is great and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. No problems there. But the food is not done well. The tuna pizza idea was probably the worst food I have seen in Hong Kong for a long time. The idea of placing small pieces of tuna with lettuce and mayo on a circle of nacho chips really isn't Japanese food, neither is it good quality. At HKD78, this is not super overpriced for this type of restaurant, but considering you need 4-6 items at this price or more for two people, then it starts to get expensive for what is essentially sophisticated children's food. Note the cabbage salad is also HK$68 and I mistook the serving for a free side dish. The sashimi is poor. Costing $198 for 10 thinly sliced pieces and the quality is just so so. Note that the Japanese takeaway just along the road in SYP sells much higher quality sashimi at less than a third of the price. Hand rolls were quite okay, hence two stars. Sadly, I would not come here again, I think they have a good idea, but with a very bad execution. Hong Kong would benefit from having cool restaurants in this style, but the food need to be more down to earth, and straight forward and without feeling like you've had your wallet assaulted in...
