We found a painting we loved, and my wife assures me the vendor quoted the price at $350, which was pricier than we'd usually want to pay at a post-Soviet flea market, but we mulled it over and decided to return the next day... our last in town... with 800 Georgian lari (2.48 : 1)in hand to try to talk him down to $300. Found the painting again, loved it, asked the price, and he said $3,500. I requested clarification several times, trying broken Russian and asking the price in lari instead of dollars, but he repeated several times and even wrote 3-5-0-0 with his finger on the painting, verbally adding "dollars" for emphasis. We're still baffled. We really wanted that goddamn painting. This guy was either confused or he only sells one every few years to an Arab prince. Still a...
