I never leave negative reviews for any establishment, but this place truly sucks. Do not give them your patronage if you value cleanliness, good customer service, and fair pricing. Very rude staff particularly the older gentleman who shoo'd me from the store for sitting down at the establishment for over an hour trying to finish up a work assignment that was due, fyi - the store was not busy at the time; there were no customers who I was displacing by being there.
I was about to walk over to a different gelato shop when the older gentleman beckoned me over, and silly me I walk over to his gelato shop. Not seeing any flavors that peaked my interest, I settle on a vanilla gelato. I sit down to start working and within a minutes the gelato is brought over to my table in a clear glass ice cream cup - they can get a B+ from me for presentation. I am typing up my report using my own wifi and eating my gelato. Occasionally I notice one of the gentlemen who works at the establishment hovering over me but I pay it no attention and continue to type and eat. About 1/3 of the way through my gelato I see a insect in my gelato. Disgusted, I slide my gelato to the side and keep typing. I say nothing to the employees about it, I just keep working but I do order a single serving bottle of frizzante as I felt that if I'm taking up space trying to get my work done, I should order something else. 30 more minutes pass and the older gentleman walks over to me and says we're closing you need to leave in broken English. I take a minute or two to finish up what I'm typing then walk over to the cash register to settle my bill. I ask the gentleman "quanto" and with a nasty attitude he responds "€10" - for 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream and a small bottle of off brand seltzer water, are you kidding me? I hand him my card without saying a word, snatched it back when he's done then promptly walk over to the gelato store directly across from his shop, ordered more gelato, then proceeded to sit outside - making sure he had a good view of me- ate my delicious €3 gelato and finished my report.
Fyi, they didn't close. They were still open and continued to serve customers. If you are in Amalfi and consider going to this place, try the shop directly across the way from them. The employees there are friendly and professional and the...
Read moreSTAY AWAY! - Expensive gelato - bad service - potentially scamming customers There are three gelaterias in a row close to the main square in Amalfi. This is the middle one. It was hard for me to tell that they were actually separate places initially. (Multiple gelaterias we've seen in other places have more than one counter of gelato ... maybe the chocolate, mocha, hazelnut, etc. on one side and fruity flavors on the other side, so it was not an unreasonable assumption that the places were connected.) Both of the other places had pricing on the size of their gelato cups but I guess this one did not. I had seen the small cups marked for 3 euro. So I went to the counter and asked for two of the 3-euro cups. The guy proceeded to put gelato in the cups and as I tried to give him my card, he told me that they could only take cash because their lines were down. So I started getting out 6 euros but he said it was 12 euros. I told him that I had asked for the 3 euro cups and he said they didn't have any 3-euro cups. (So apparently I had seen those prices on the adjoining businesses.) He just arbitrarily gave us 6 euro cups without telling us the cost. I think he would have charged me 12 euros on my card without even clarifying what I was paying. I was very frustrated and nearly decided to give the gelato back and walk away; but my husband doesn't like to make waves, so we just...
Read moreI’m not usually one to post reviews but my uniquely horrible experience here has inspired me to start.
Whether you’re a tourist in the area or even a local, it’s important to know what happens at this store as a customer, and avoid buying gelato here. Not only is the gelato overpriced, there is absolutely no concern for food safety or cleanliness, the same people handle the money and touch your cones and gelato.
They also have a grand old time smoking while handling the food they serve you, and in case you were wondering, cigarette flavoured gelato isn’t good. It’s worth knowing you also have to pay an additional fee if you want to sit down to eat the gelato you buy from them. The sweet gelato we ordered was bitter to the taste, this is either the result of the cigarette smoke or maybe it’s spoiled, neither would surprise me.
It’s mind boggling to see this store still has business but I’m assuming this is at the cost of many unassuming customers who are unaware of the terrible service and gelato provided here.
Any positive reviews for this place are completely beyond understanding but I’m just an average guy, not some fancy local guide or food reviewer. Maybe enjoying bad food and bad service are an acquired taste.
If you enjoy wasting money on nasty gelato and having smoke blown in your face, this is the...
