What an AMAZING experience this was. I joined the morning market and street food tour with Streaty in Palermo and everything totally exceeded my expectations. I'd been on many of food tour but this one was truly special. We of course went to the major food destinations (i.e. the markets) now known by all, however the WAY that we visited the sites and the vendors made all of the difference. We were brought around by a real local who knew everyone personally so it felt really special on that front. We were also brought to some secret, local spots some in plainsight and right near the tourist traps but even a sleuth like myself could not have found these places on my own. Nor would I have felt comfortable just walking in myself. You really need that local rapport and introduction to such local haunts. The food was delicious. and everything eaten was authentically Palermo. We learned not just the history behind each bit we ate, but were told of some of the customs, traditions and history of the city (a part from the food history) along the way. We were also taken around to some really off-the-beaten path alleyways, which was a unique way to see the city - and another thing I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. I passed a really beautiful and fun day with a great group of people (Streaty's tours attract a certain kind of cliente aka good people who are open minded especially when it comes to food). But what really made the experience for me was Alessandro, our local guide and expert. His knowledge, energy, personality and passion for his city was incredible. He made everyone feel so welcome and comfortable with each other, took the greatest care of us making us learn and laugh simultaneously and at the end of our 3 hours together, I was honestly sad for our time to end! I can't recommend Streaty's unique and authentic food & culinary experiences enough when visiting Palermo and other parts of Italy now I see! Thank you again for the most memorable and...
Read moreOur guide Angelo was brilliant. He was a fantastic mixture of fun, serious, enthusiastic and engaging. He was clearly very intelligent and interested in other cultures and very willing to share the good, and the bad about his own. The food was fantastic, and ethically sourced. Non of the food was wasted, as he took any leftovers (we were offered) and shared with those in need of a meal. He knew what foods were in season and where the best sources were. We learned about the history of the city and how much food is such a significant part of Sicilian culture. But we were shown REAL food, that would be eaten by Sicilian families, not always showy expensive things, but seasonal and fresh food. It was crazy tasty. The atmosphere in the bars and restaurants was welcoming. It was wonderful to watch him immersed in his city, hugging and kissing so many passers by.
Beautiful tour. Don’t hesitate to book. You often worry about overpriced, unethical tours that are tourist traps. This is not one of them. Excellent value for money and a real heartfelt, meaningful tour. It was a joy to listen to his stories and enjoy the food. We fell asleep in the park after the tour as we were very full. Thank you Angelo for creating a special memory for us on our trip. We were also very lucky as the other tourists were very warm...
Read moreI would wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Palermo who wants to gain an insight into the culture and cuisine of this splendid city.
Angelo was an extremely good guide who was informed, informative, and very entertaining. His enthusiasm soon gelled our group which included two British couples (my wife had lived in the same small town as the husband of the other British couple when they were younger which was an astounding coincidence), a German woman and her parents, and an American couple and their teenaged children.
I had been looking forward to one of the dishes since I had first come across it when researching Palermo. With no Italian and no local knowledge, I wouldn't have had the first clue where to go or how to buy it so I was very happy indeed to eat it in La Vucciria. It was all I had dreamed of and more!
All the dishes were delicious. We had beer at one stop, wine at another, and Marsala at another (that's marsala, Angelo!). The cannoli at the end were delicious but the food had been so plentiful throughout the morning that we had to save some for later!
My wife was booked in as a vegetarian and there were tasty alternatives to the...
