Novart Deco — Local services in Perugia

This review is not “bullying” or “spam”, it is a genuine account of a horrible experience we had on Monday 19 December 2022 at around 17:00.

I called in to Novart Deco in search of some archival card for mounting photographic prints. I needed the material urgently in order to finish our apartment for guests who were staying over Christmas. If I’d have been in less of a hurry, I’d have walked out and found what I needed somewhere else.

The owner was openly hostile from the moment we entered the shop, before we’d even spoken. My partner happens to be a person of colour. We can’t think what else might have caused such a strange reception.

I tried to explain what I needed in my best Italian. The owner was dismissive and rude. He even swore at me, apparently for taking card from its position to the till without noting the price. I assumed he’d know what he was selling.

We left angry that we’d supported his business but won’t be doing so again and would encourage others to find a friendlier and more professional supplier.

È un negozio bellissimo, pieno di oggetti interessanti e ben fornito. La prima volta che ci sono entrato avevo 15 anni, con alcuni amici del liceo artistico. Ricordo che stavamo guardando dei pennarelli: chiacchieravamo tra di noi, sì, ma senza rovinare nulla. Dopo poco, però, il proprietario ha cominciato a metterci fretta, fino a cacciarci via. All’epoca pensai che forse stavamo disturbando troppo, anche se non stavamo facendo niente di male.

Quest’anno ci sono tornato un paio di volte, e ogni volta ho percepito lo stesso atteggiamento: il proprietario si mostra subito infastidito, sbrigativo, come se volesse liberarsi dei clienti il prima possibile. Ma ho notato che questo atteggiamento non è rivolto a tutti: sembra riservato solo a chi è straniero. Premetto che io sono straniero.

Durante una delle visite, ero entrato accompagnato per chiedere delle informazioni e, mentre aspettavo il mio turno, sono entrate alcune ragazze asiatiche. Appena le ha viste, il proprietario è sembrato subito infastidito, come se non si fidasse di loro:si è subito alzato e si è diretto verso di loro ed a iniziato a far loro domande in modo scontroso.

quindi mi chiedo: è perché sono straniero? Perché quando ci sono entrato con la mia ragazza — che è italiana — lei stessa mi ha detto che da sola non ha mai avuto problemi, mentre con me nota sempre questo atteggiamento negativo.

Quindi davvero… mi chiedo: è per via del colore della pelle? O perché mi vede come uno “straniero”?

Non voglio sminuire il negozio, perché è davvero ben fornito e pieno di articoli interessanti. Tuttavia, non sono mai riuscito a visitarlo con calma proprio a causa del comportamento del proprietario, che ogni volta si è mostrato scortese e infastidito. Ho notato che c’è solo un’altra recensione simile alla mia, ma ci tengo a precisare che non sto scrivendo per fare bullismo o spam: sto solo raccontando la mia esperienza in modo onesto...
