Yamakataya Department Store — Local services in Kagoshima

A well known and traditional department store established more than 100 years ago (since 1917) on the same place, which further dates back more than two hundred years in its origin as the designated apparel trader “Yamagataya” for Satsuma clan in old days Kagoshima in the Edo era. Thus the goods wrapped in Yamagata’s gift package is most appreciated among local residents, more than those of department stores in Tokyo such as Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya, here. On the first( ground ) floor to upper floors, luxury and daily goods are sold while on the basement floor, food products are sold including many brands of wine and Shochu. Some famous European brands are also sold. In particular, Luis Vuitton has a branch shop on the ground floor of the main building. The grocery, butchery and fishery products are sold on the basement floor of the 2nd building, which is connected to the main building trough an underground passage. Many typical local food products are sold in the basement floors as well....

This is a place to see in Kagoshima. It is one of the largest department stores in Japan. The building is really unique and has a really interesting appeal. The department store itself is spread over several buildings, and many of the signs are in Japanese only, so you might need to ask a store employee or use Google Translate with the camera. You can find all kinds of high-end merchandise in this store, like clothes and jewelry. The most interesting part, I think, is the basement, where you'll find sweets and snacks fit for a king. There are dozens of little kiosks that each sell their own unique products. Some are permanent locations and some are temporary, so there's a chance you might not be able to find the same...
