I made a reservation for a haircut on an upcoming trip to Japan. I got an e-mail from the salon saying "We apologize, but we may refuse service unless you bring someone who can speak or translate Japanese. Translation apps are not permitted."

I am a no-fuss, low maintenance client who just wants to cut off 6 inches of hair (from long to shoulder length). I came here for a cut and perm whilst travelling. My stylist 阿部純子 Junko was so patient and kind, despite my lack of Japanese. She was so beautiful, too. She took the time to understand what I wanted, explained each part of the process and after care. She cautioned that the Japanese treatment might not work well. I was so nervous, I waited a week before washing my hair, but I needn't have worried. The curls bounced back straight away. I thought it wasn't exactly what I was after, but I'm finding I can get both tighter curls or loose natural waves depending on how I dry and style...
