I stayed at this hotel during the New Year holidays in 2024. To avoid affecting any specific staff member, I chose to write this review a year later, as the incident may have simply been due to a long workday or a language barrier.
First of all, the hotel is well located, and the facilities were reasonably good. However, I had a slightly unpleasant experience during check-in. I often use the service that sends luggage from the hotel directly to the airport, and the previous night I stayed at Mitsui Garden Hotel, which was able to arrange that service for me.
When I asked the front desk at this hotel if they could help me book the same service, I’m not sure if the staff member fully understood what I meant—perhaps due to the language barrier—but his response was essentially that they couldn’t provide it. Up to that point, the interaction was completely normal.
However, what made me uncomfortable was that I noticed the gentleman turned to his colleague and muttered, “面倒臭い” (“mendokusai” – meaning something like “what a hassle”). While I spoke in English during the conversation, I do understand some basic Japanese—and unfortunately, I understood that phrase.
I don’t know if he was referring to the situation or to me personally, but is it really appropriate to say something like that in front of a guest, assuming they won’t understand?
Overall, I had a wonderful impression of Japan during this trip. People were kind and welcoming everywhere I went, and it made me truly appreciate both the country and its people. I even donated to support those affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, hoping to express my own respect and goodwill.
This was just a small incident, but it left me with an uncomfortable feeling. I sincerely hope it was just an unfortunate moment and not representative of the hotel’s...
Read moreThe Hotel Monterey Ginza is quite an unique hotel in the Ginza district. First of all, the hotel's main structure has that classical look, but the amenities in the guest room are quite modern. In fact, each room comes with a pre-configured Android smartphone that has unlimited 4G data and voice over IP. You can even use it for international calling (again, unlimited minutes) -- I did not try it personally, but it's definitely something nice to have because travel SIM is not cheap in Japan. All facilities, including the guest rooms are clean, even though they have that aged look. The staffs were very helpful to me. I was there almost 3 hours earlier than their official check-in time, but they let me check in and go into my room anyway. In fact, the luggage that I sent to them a few days before was already in my room! That's a surprise to me. As for the price, I think this is basically unbeatable. Given the kind of services and the size of the room that they provide, I really don't think you can find another hotel in Ginza that can beat them.
If I have to complain, it is the location. While it is not very far from the nearest stations, it took about 10 to 15 minutes to walk to them. Well, technically there's a Ginza-itchōme Station just across the street, but it's on the Yurakucho Line, which isn't very useful for tourists or visitors, unless your only plan is to go to Ikebukuro, or Gokokuji. Don't get me wrong, though, at the price you are paying for this hotel, you won't regret walking 15 minutes to...
Read moreThis hotel is alright for the price. Me and my wife picked this hotel because of a few things. Why where looking for something more fancy, a bit above average. We also wanted to live close to everything here in Ginza, which was the biggest reason we picked this hotel. The subway is around the corner, literally, it's a 10 min walk to Nissan Square (where the famous Seiko shop is) and 80m to McDonalds in case you want something cheap and fast. The reception in quite small and doesn't really have the "wow factor" you get from the really expensive hotels, but we spent expect that anyway. Theres no hotel bar. Even though the hotel is surrounded by bars, we feel that every hotel in this price range and up should have a hotel bar. The rooms are alright. We stayed in an above average room. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive. It's alright. The bed is nice and the bathroom feels fresh. The tub is a bit small for my long swedish viking legs, but I manage. The exterior of the hotel is cool, very French inspired. And that's a theme across the whole hotel. Theres French inspired interior and french music playing in the hallways. We haven't tried the restaurant so I cant comment on that. If I should sum it up, I'll give it a 3/4. With a bar and a bit more fancier interior and rooms, I would give it a 4. It's a great hotel if you're planning to spend time in Ginza and wants to live close...
