How can you not like this heartwarming shop. A shop encouraging people not to give up hope and helping them eat healthily.
It was featured on an NHK special in English (originally probably in Japanese), highlighting the owner's desire to help young people afford healthy and delicious vegetables. When she was younger there was a point when she could not afford to eat much food and she became skin and bones.
She and her son work hard to produce fresh vegetables that are sold at this unmanned stand, just minutes from Ebisu station. Most of the vegetables are grown by herself but I think some are bought at a local auction in the morning (?)
Two fresh medium-sized spring harvest onions and some mini potatoes for 100yen. I think people should pay more or what they can to support her cause, kind of pay it forward sort of system. To sell everything at 100yen is quite challenging with rising costs. Her farm is in Saitama so it also costs quite a bit (commute time and highway tolls) to get to Ebisu daily to drop off the veggies.
The new onions were fresh, crispy, slightly sweet and not spicy like onions often are. I think they might have been ones she procured from Saga.
Synecoculture is her style so she limits use of pesticides and herbicides, allowing the vegetables to grow freely. The shape and condition may not be perfect but she said that, like humans, they are all precious and should be valued for their individuality.
I recommend watching the video introducing her and her son's inspirational story. On 'Dear Nippon' on NHK on YouTube.
If you go a bit late, there's not much in terms of selection. This was on a Sunday around 2pm and only onions and...
