Did this tour last night with my wife and, a buddy visiting from UK, and a husband and wife we met on the day who were also doing the tour, so just a small group of us. There were at least 3 other groups of people the operator does, we saw then setting off at earlier times from the meeting point, we appreciated the small more intimate group sizes, I believe they keep it to a maximum of 8, though you can arrange for larger parties by special advance booking.
Our booking was for 6pm, and we came really early to have a drink at the hotel where the meeting point was, they had a rooftop bar, amazing view, and it was happy hour, bonus! When the tour started Nadia our guide introduced herself, gave us a brief rundown of what to expect (15 different food items, plus some extra drinks), and warned us about any possible changes due to the weather before we headed off through a market where she showed us many of the ingredients we would be consuming that night, and explained how they're usually prepared etc.
Nadia really knew her stuff, was never stumped by any of our questions (and we had a lot of them) and was able to explain things really well to us, often with some added jokes and good humour, we really appreciated her style and delivery, but also that she gave lots of extra history and details about Malaysian culture throughout the tour, not just about the food, but the buildings, areas, religions, politics, people... She really knew her stuff and we learned heaps we hadn't known before despite have been to Malaysia many times before and being quite well read up on it.
Now, finally, the food... OMG, so much food, do NOT eat at all that day before coming because you will really struggle to try everything even when you don't eat all day, I was getting full by the halfway point and I'm a big guy. The variety and different flavours was fantastic, there was only one thing all night that I didn't really care for, it wasnt bad, just a bit bland for my liking, but that's subjective, there were many things later that I enjoyed that others didn't, I like bold and complex flavours and there was lots of that on this tour. Nadia was really good about Warning everybody about what to expect, and she even ensured sauces came separately for certain dishes so people could try them with and without.
Service delivery was fantastic, Nadia was running around doing heaps ahead of time making sure there was always a table for us, sometimes going back to get things while we went ahead and ate somewhere so we wouldn't have to wait around too long (4 hours for a tour seems a long time but it goes quick and they usually overrun I expect, ours did by about half an hour and I felt we were quite speedy). There's a lot of walking but honestly that helped the food go down and was appreciated. Was really pleased that if we really liked something Nadia was always happy to go and get more of it for us, though be careful how much extras you order because you will run out of stomach space.
One word of warning, though the tour roete is great and ending at the Petronas towers is a great end point, be careful of the bridge, it's very slippery when wet and KL is often wet. They sometimes reroute the end if it's really wet, ours was only mildly moist so we went over, most of our group was fine but because I had old flip flops on I struggled with slipping, so also maybe wear appropriate foot wear, haha! Also, Grabs can take ages to pickup from near the Petronas towers, either walk away a few streets away from that big junction, or just do what we did and walk all the way home, you'll probably need to walk off some of that food anyway.
Overall 100% would recommend this tour! We've done others and this was one of the best! Even the durian I had wasn't bad,...

We did the evening Sambal Streets food tour with Uncle Sam, my husband, our two little girls, and I in a small group setting, and it was absolutely fantastic! What stood out was how thoughtful Sam was with our kids. At every stop, he checked that the food wouldn’t be too spicy for them, which made the whole experience super enjoyable for the whole family.
We started our trip by walking through the market, where Sam introduced us to a variety of local ingredients like stink beans, pandan leaves, and dried fish. It was a fun and educational start that set the tone for the evening. He then introduced exotic fruits like snake fruit, longan, and rambutan. I had never tried snake fruit before, but I am very familiar with and love longan and rambutan. We also enjoyed other tropical fruits like dragon’s eye and mangosteen.
One of the most memorable moments was trying the putu bambu, a steamed coconut rice cake wrapped in bamboo, right as the lady was making it. Getting to eat it fresh and warm was such a treat and truly felt like a behind the scenes local experience.
We also sampled so many amazing dishes throughout the night, including grilled mackerel (ikan bakar), fragrant laksa, beef and beehun noodle soups, roti canai, and satay. Even my 5 and 6 year old daughters had a go at making roti canai, which they both loved! My daughters also loved the satay. And of course, we had the national dish, nasi lemak.
No one else in my group wanted to try the durian or cendol, but I gave it a go, and I’m so glad I did! The durian cendol especially was one of my favorite highlights of the night, thanks to Sam’s recommendation.
I wish I had more room in my stomach as this was my first food tour and I loved it so much. Uncle Sam is so knowledgeable and has so much love for the authentic foods, and I really loved how he ties food and culture together.
Overall, Sam was not only super knowledgeable and friendly, but also incredibly attentive. This review is a bit late (my apologies Uncle Sam) but the memories are still fresh. Highly recommend his tour for families or anyone wanting a true taste of...
Read moreWe just had the most fantastic night in Kuala Lumpur thanks to our amazing guide, Ian, who led this beautifully curated foodie tour.
Even before the evening began, communication was wonderful — Ian reached out via WhatsApp with clear instructions and made sure we knew what to expect. From the very first stop at the local market, surrounded by the colors and sounds of daily life, we started to understand Malaysian food from its roots — the fresh produce, the spices, the people behind it all.
Our progressive dinner that followed was a perfect blend of flavor and culture. We even got to make roti ourselves, which was such a joyful, hands-on moment! Ian looked after us with such care — reminding us where each best toilet stop was, explaining what to expect when dinning in Malaysia, and keeping an eye on our comfort and safety. We truly felt pampered the entire evening.
As a Taiwanese traveler, I’ve always been proud of our own night market and street food culture, but this experience really takes it to another level. You can watch endless YouTubers or influencers talking about Malaysian food, but you’ll never get this depth of understanding — the humor, the human stories, and the cultural connections Ian shares so effortlessly.
With the Petronas Towers shining in the distance and traditional Malaysian houses nearby, the evening felt like watching Kuala Lumpur’s story unfold — a city shaped by migration, colonial history, and a vibrant mix of cultures.
If 5 stars is the highest rating, I’d still want to give Ian more. His passion, energy, and hospitality made this not just a food tour, but a journey through culture, history, and heart. Truly...
