Waewae Pounamu — Local services in South Island

This is the place to come to get the genuine Pounamu sourced from New Zealand!!! Not only was the service excellent, but the lovely lady (wahine) shop assistant totally understood what I was looking for: Nz flower greenstone, that it had to “call to me,”to make it really special, and that my husband was giving it to me as a gift. I was looking for a specific design; a hook or MATAU. We had driven specifically to Hokitika from Christchurch to obtain this special gift. Having checked out various sellers of Greenstone in Hokitika, we checked out Ngāi Tahu Pounamu and we were very delighted with the quality of worked stone, fantastic modern premises with stunning displays. We were encouraged to hold, try on, and had lots of choice. I settled on beautiful Pounamu, and was super delighted that my MATAU was carved by a talented Wahine called Nikita. One of the first female carvers in the group. Very progressive and making new traditions. This also answered my question on my way up if women carvers were permitted in the trade. Great experience in this store. I rarely give 5 stars but this business gets 5 stars....

A few years ago I was gifted a beautiful taonga from Waewae pounamu. Unfortunately an accident happened and my taonga was damaged. I contacted them and they repaired my precious taonga and had it back to me all in a very short timeframe. I received it back just in time before I left home for major surgery.
