Walking along the street seeing a large black and white sign simply saying sandwhiches, no ambiguity there I pop in for a takeaway lunch. OK I became a fan of this place just waiting in the queue. The guy infront ordered a cappuccino and was advised the speciality here was filter coffee, some confusion for the young couple holding a baby. He was not sure what the deal was. The owner explained he could get an everlasting cup of coffee they filter on site and this week the blend of choice was Honduran, wait for it, accompanied by local fresh cream. They had me at filter coffee. I remember all cafes and restaurants had filter coffee, usually 2 Kona glass carafes sitting on hot plates with one under a machine filtering. Loved that stuff. My turn at the counter and I ordered a coaster sandwich as I was on the coast and one filter coffee. While waiting for my order I saw they also had a very cool selection of tea, I enquired if I could by some loose tea leaves of and interesting blend they had on offer and yes no issue out came some scales and job done. I poured my Honduran coffee with a splash of cream and left. The coffee hands down beats a flat white any day. So 20 minutes later about to leave town for Arthur's Pass and a coffee on the go would be good I grabbed my car flask and headed back and asked for a coffee now a different sales person said "weren't you in here earlier" and I said yes, she said "it's an all day coffee help your self". Taking the last gulp out of my thermal cup as I drove up the driveway 90 minutes later. I will be back. Oh yeah the Coaster sandwich, outstanding. To get an idea of their sandwiches google an image it will do a better job than my...
Read moreUpdate of Sep 2023. This was my 3rd visit to HSC Hokitika. Each time, we had the same Vegetarian sandwich (half) and each time it is as good as we remember.
It always ends up a very satisfying meal, even though a very simple meal. Thanks to the HSC team for being consistently good with their quality and service.
My only ‘complaint’ is that they are closed on Sunday which means we cannot enjoy their flavours on the way back to Christchurch!
Previous review:
I had previously enjoyed Hokitika Sandwich Company’s sandwich at Christchurch but this was the first time at Hokitika!
We pre-ordered 2 x half vegetarian sandwiches on-line; and reached in time for the same. The sandwiches were served quickly. They were as delicious as I remembered.
Being lunchtime on a Friday, the place was busy. The wait time was about 45 minutes. I was glad I ordered ahead of the visit, which is also my recommendation!
Highly recommended- I will most certainly be eating their...
Read moreHusband and I were hungry and so we popped in for a sandwich. I told him I wasn't that hungry but I'd get a half one. Worst mistake of my life. I ordered the Veggie and as soon as I took the first bite and got pumpkin and beetroot with that fresh housemade aioli, I realised how hungry I really was and immediately wished I'd got a full for some for lunch later!! Each time we go in the sandwiches are so beautifully balanced in flavour and so filling yet leave you wanting more! So many options, and they're so brilliant about making sure you'll enjoy what you get. I'm pregnant currently so the goats cheese was a no go, but they happily swapped the cheese for me so I wouldn't be missing out. The first time I was in there they also checked I would be alright with the aioli as it had the raw egg! The service is always fantastic, the vibe is wonderful, and the food is to die for. Can't wait till we go...
