A Northern Lights Experience Beyond Expectations – Thanks to David!
Our trip to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø was nothing short of magical, and we have David to thank for making it an unforgettable experience. From the moment we met him, his passion for what he does was evident—and it was contagious!
One of the biggest advantages for us was that David is originally from Slovakia and speaks perfect English, making communication effortless. As fellow Slovaks, it was great to discuss not only the Northern Lights but also life in Norway and Tromsø from a perspective that truly resonated with us.
David is also an avid landscape photographer, and the photos he captured were absolutely incredible! What made it even better was that he asked us what kind of pictures we wanted and made sure to get them. The turnaround was unbelievably fast—he had them edited and sent to us by 9 AM the next morning, even though we returned around midnight. That level of service and dedication is rare!
Another highlight of the tour was the carefully chosen location. David took us to a picturesque spot right next to a traditional Norwegian house with a grass roof, creating a cozy and authentic atmosphere. He even built a fire for us and provided an incredible selection of snacks and drinks. We enjoyed traditional Norwegian blueberry drinks, hot chocolate, tea, coffee, chocolates, marshmallows for roasting, donuts, dried reindeer meat, reindeer soup, and a variety of hot dogs—including vegan, vegetarian, chicken, and pork with cheese options. It felt like a feast under the Arctic sky!
He truly thought of every detail—even setting up an outdoor toilet in a tent, which was an incredibly convenient touch given the cold Norwegian nights.
Most importantly, the Northern Lights were absolutely breathtaking. We were extremely lucky to witness a spectacular display—eruptions of light covering the entire sky. It was far beyond anything we had imagined. With the professional photos and videos David provided at no extra charge, we now have stunning memories to share with friends and family.
For those wanting to capture their own photos, David had plenty of tripods available and even took the time to explain how to set up our phones for the best results. Of course, his professional camera shots were on another level!
This experience was mind-blowing in every way, and we truly believe there is no better guide than David. His enthusiasm, expertise, and attention to detail made this the best tour imaginable. If you’re looking for a Northern Lights adventure, this is the one to book—without hesitation!
Thank you, David, for an experience we will...
Read moreWe booked our Northern Lights tour for 18 Dec together as a group of 7 directly with Ami Hotel. Our guides are enthusiastic and passionate in hunting the Northern Lights & we were pretty blessed that night as we do not need to drive far to catch the northern lights. We enjoyed a couple of hours of nice aurora dancing in the skies. Our guide also took several professional photos of the entire group & emailed them to us after the trip.
Once we settled down in a good spot to view the northern lights, our guides set up a bonfire & offered us sausages (vegetarian option available) & marshmallows to cook over the fire. They also serve as hot chocolate, coffee & tea. Our guide shared several interesting myths / stories of the northern lights by different cultures. Another bonus for this tour is having an outdoor portable toilet in a heated tent.
On our trip back to Tromso town, we were fortunate to see a few reindeers on the road & our driver & guide stopped the minibus for us to take some photos of them. Overall, it was a nice & fruitful tour.
Negatives: Unfortunately, we were not given warm / thermal suits to put on before we head out for the tour. We were told to arrive at 5.45 pm at Ami Hotel for our fitting of warm suits, but we were not given any for this tour. As a result, many of us including guests from other European countries like Austria were still feeling very cold despite sitting / standing near the bonfire for extended periods and despite having the blankets to cover ourselves & reindeer skin to step on.
There was also an error with getyourguide that overbooked this tour for 18 Dec, which resulted in a much bigger group than usual.
Otherwise, I would give this tour a 5/5, if we do not have to put up with the very cold weather without the warm suits. FYI, we did wear several layers including a thick long down jacket which is still insufficient to fend off the cold with the bonfire & blanket.
We did another northern lights tour with another company in Abisko where we were given thermal overall. The cold is bearable even without wearing our own down jackets & bonfire. Temperatures for both northern lights tours were...
Read moreThere was everything we needed: warm clothes, boots, various hot drinks, food, sweets, blankets, (phone) camera tips, WiFi on the bus, tripods for cameras and phones…! For the day of my tour every forecast predicted cloudy skies in the whole area. So Margaux and Martine phoned a few people and checked multiple Apps to find a good place for the evening. There we made a campfire and roasted some marshmallows. By then we could see the northern lights on camera but not with the naked eye. They still took pictures of all of us - just in case we couldn’t see them later. Afterwards we made hotdogs (vegetarian option available) and Margaux and Martine told us a few stories and legends about northern lights and everything else we wanted to know. Unfortunately the weather forecasts were right and the sky got cloudier. Therefore we decided to pack everything and head back to Tromsø. Even though I didn’t “see” the northern lights I thought that it was worth the time and money. But then on our way back to the city we saw some green lights on the roof camera so Martine stopped at the nearest spot possible and we went outside to enjoy the show. They again took all their camera equipment with them and took as much pictures of us as we wanted - always checking that they were not blurry. As I traveled alone I was very thankful that someone took pictures of me with the northern lights. When the show ended we got back in the warm bus and they dropped us off at our hotels. Not even 14 hours later we got all the pictures they took (+timelapse of the northern lights). It truly was an unforgettable experience (not only because of the...
