I don’t understand why shopping malls require dogs to wear diapers. I get that it might be because some pet owners are irresponsible and don’t clean up after their dogs—but that’s not true for everyone. Not all dogs are the same.

I was recently approached by a mall security guard while walking my dogs on the grass lawn at Greenbelt. He told me, “Kailangan po may diaper.” I calmly explained that my dogs are fully potty trained. They’re even crate trained and only relieve themselves on grass, trees or pee pads when indoors. But even after explaining, he kept insisting—just because they weren’t wearing diapers. (I’ve been walking my dogs here for 3 years and this is my first time hearing this. other dogs I see here whether indoors or outdoors are also not wearing diapers)

I would totally understand if we were walking indoors through the mall—I’d respect whatever policy they have. But this was outdoors. On the grass. It just doesn’t make sense.

It’s disheartening that this kind of approach seems to be more common here in the Philippines. In many other countries, you can take your dog in and out of public spaces without all this fuss—no diapers, no strollers—just common sense and accountability. We need more of that here.
