Inside the 'Church of the Holy Cross of the Castle of São Jorge' in Lisbon is a relic with a piece of the cross at which Jesus Christ was crucified. The church history dates back to 1147, when an archbishop consecrated it in the presence of King Afonso Henriques and four other bishops. On this 1st of November, a Holy Cross relic was placed inside the church. After the church was mostly destroyed during the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt in baroque style and reopened 25 years after. Some older parts of the previous church were reused. The Holy Cross relic returned and can be seen on display even today. The relic of a piece of the cross at which Christ was crucified is contained inside a richly ornamented golden cross, which is almost 900 years old. It can be viewed at a niche of the church. Also, there are other side altars, amongst them, one of Saint George, the patron of the castle.
