In general, I love Food Lover’s Market and have always appreciated the variety and quality. However, I’ve noticed several issues over the past year that I feel compelled to share.
In December, the store switched to a new supplier for biltong and droëwors, and unfortunately, the quality has gone downhill. The biltong and droëwors have an odd taste, and the cabanossi is extremely dry and flavorless. To be honest, Pick n Pay is currently offering better quality biltong and droëwors.
Another concern is the decision to move the biltong and droëwors counter to the far end of the meat section. For four days, I thought Food Lover’s had stopped selling them entirely. This change feels unnecessary and confusing for regular customers.
I also miss the delicious tramezzinis you used to make with chicken mayo, bacon, cheese, and avo. Now, the options are limited to ham, tomato, and cheese or a plain chicken mayo and cheese. Is there any chance the old recipe can make a comeback?
The quality of the prepared foods has also declined. I used to love the chicken nuggets, but now they are often cold and mushy, like they’re made from cheap chicken paste, or hard and dry like they’ve been left in an air fryer for too long. Similarly, the sandwiches, croissants, wraps, and tramezzinis sometimes have a cheese that smells and tastes old or moldy, which is disappointing.
Lastly, the removal of the “10 items or less” express till line has been frustrating. It’s unfair to expect customers with only a few items to wait behind others with full trolleys. Improving the till experience would make shopping much more efficient.
Food Lover’s Market used to excel at quality control, but it seems to have slipped in the past year. I rarely write complaints as it’s mentally taxing, but I felt this needed to be said. I hope these points are taken as constructive feedback to help improve the...
Read moreReally has a lot of variety, but unfortunately the bakery standards are dipping. My Family and I/Office got obsessed with Cinnamon Doughnut special 9's since i 1st purchased to try from the Castle Gate store opening, we delighted with the quality & freshness, we were hooked. So i decided to fuel our new obsession by purchasing these doughnuts from the Menlyn branch, i purchase every 2 to 3 days weekly , a box of 9s religiously since the opening of Castle Gate... The doughnuts from this branch seem to getting worse, with my pleas not being acknowledged at all,yes when i complain about the quality, freshness it is changed accordingly, but understand the inconvenience i am faced with.. i have bought at different times at the day as early as before the store opening to after 4pm,an d the quality has deteriorated consistently. We have experienced, raw doughnuts, over fried dark brown, short in quantity, sugarless....point is there is no consistency anymore or the bakery manager just does not care ,as week by week these doughnuts are not improving but getting worse... i hope something is done,as this line is popular judging by no stock at the end of the day... Just purchased another box yesterday, tried 2 0f the 9, the 7 remaining looked over cooked and dry, the 2 we tried, 1st one was raw ie0under cooked,2nd was overcooked, both were dry, not fresh, Really...
Read moreOne of my favourite Food Lovers Market's.
Very helpful staff that always go out of their way to make sure you have what you need.
They have really good specials every week, however for the most part their general prices are in line or not significantly cheaper than other major retailers. What sells me on them though is the quality of the produce and meats. I am almost always guaranteed the freshest produce. There have been slip ups from time to time in quality, but they quickly rectify this when it does happen.
I find that their general and household items sections are not always in line with other major retailers in terms of price and you can often pay significantly more on certain items, so check your prices before visiting so you don't lose out.
Their bakery is AMAZING! I always pick up a chocolate muffin on my way through the store. They never disappoint!
One of my biggest disappointments in the store is their lack of a 10 items or less queue. Over the pay day weeks there are significant queues with an understaffed checkout area, so if you have only a few items you can queue for absolute ages.
Otherwise at any other time it is smooth sailing through the store!...
