세종조의 강녕전은 창덕궁 대조전과 같이 왕과 왕비의 공동처소였던 것으로 최근 밝혀졌다. 그러나 현재 복원된 강녕전은 고종 때의 것으로 경복궁 내의 왕실 침전영역 중 왕의 중심 침전으로 다시 지어졌다. 정전인 근정전과 편전인 사정전 뒤로 남북축을 따라 배치되어 있다. 경녕전 영역은 대침인 강녕전을 중심으로 전면 좌우로 소침인 경성전, 연생전, 후면 좌우로 응지당, 연길당의 5채의 건물로 구성되어 있다. 고종대 중건 당시에는 강녕전의 후면과 연길당, 응지당의 전면이 복도로 연결되어 있었으나 1995년 복원시에 복도는 복원하지 않았다. 경복궁의 창건 당시 강녕전은 전면 7칸에 동서양측에 2칸의 부속칸이 있었고 현재보다는 규모가 적었다. 세종15년 강녕전이 건물이 낮고 어두워 수리를 했다하며 세종22년에 처음으로 교태전 영역을 건립하여 왕과 왕비의 처소를 구분했다 한다. 강년전은 명종 6년(1553) 큰 불로 침전영역의 모든 걸물이 전소했으며 다음해 중건했으나 40년 후 임진왜란 중에 완전히 불타 사라진 후 흥선대원군의 경복궁 재건(1865)까지 270여년 동안 폐허로 남아 있었다. 이후 고종 13년(1876)에 다시 불타 소실되고 고종25년 (1888)복구 되었다 1918년 창덕궁의 화재로 대조전과 희정당 등이 불타자 이를 중건한다는 미명하에 일제에...
