One of the most, if not the most, important squares in Barcelona, and definitely the most historically significant one. One got to bear in mind that Plaça Nova is a rather newer addition to the city, being by and large formed as a result of the bombing of the area by the Mussolini's air forces during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

Plaça de Sant Jaume, on the contrary, has been a hub of the city and of the entire principality of Catalunya for hundreds and hundreds of years. It is flanked by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Catalan government, on one side, and the City Hall, Ajuntament de Barcelona, on its opposite side.

Two newer (and thus wider) streets connect Plaça de Sant Jaume to the main city thoroughfares; Carrer de Ferran connects the Plaça to La Rambla and its northern extension, Carrer de Jaume I to Via Laietana.

Partially open for traffic, Plaça de Sant Jaume is often the chosen place for political rallies, manifestations, and milestone proclamations, usually anounced from the balcony of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The square is attractively illuminated after the sunset, and on the side of Ajuntament de Barcelona, the City Hall, is the chosen place for the city's...

I had the chance to attend La Mercè Festival in Plaça de Joanmi, and honestly the atmosphere was beyond amazing. The square was full of life, colors, music, and joy. What made it even more special was the people — Barcelonians are kind, warm, forgiving, and truly beautiful in spirit.

I really enjoyed being among them; their energy and smiles made me feel at home. Barcelona itself is one of the most wonderful cities I’ve ever visited, not only for its beauty and history but also because of its people, who are without doubt among the best in the world.

A memory I’ll...
