Sirkeci station in Istanbul
Sirkeci Gar station was Istanbul's historical station for trains from Edirne and Europe. It was designed by the architect Professor August Jasmund and opened on February 11, 1888 during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Despite its official name as “Istanbul Cave,” everyone knows it is Sirkeci to distinguish it from “Haydarpasa Station” (1908), which is the newest station on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus. Sirkeci or Sirkeci is the place where the famous Orient Express from Paris ended.

An important station of the railway stations
With the opening of the Marmaray Regional Train Line on October 29, 2013, Sirkeci Station took on a new purpose as an important stop on the railway line across the Bosphorus. European and Turkish-Thracian trains no longer arrive and leave at Sirkeci. (The high-speed Bosphorus connecting Istanbul with Bulgaria, Romania and the countries of Central and Western Europe departs from Halkali, 28 kilometers [17 miles] west of Sirkeci.) Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to stroll around the station and imagine the famous luxury train of the 19th century in Constantinople. Its notable passengers meet uniformed masters (of guide interpreters) from major European embassies.
Museum at Sirkeci Station
During the construction period, special importance was attached to the harmony of this building with the architectural character of Istanbul. Istanbul, which connects East and West, has also created connections between European architecture and eastern styles.
There is a small museum at the station where artifacts related to the Ottoman railways and the history of the station are on permanent display.
There is a short history of the station for Turkish Railways. Sirkeci area has become well known for its good value hotels and restaurants. Buses and planes now carry more passengers between Istanbul and Europe compared to trains. However, the future looks bright for train travel within Turkey. New high-speed train lines linking Istanbul, Eskişehir, Ankara and Konya, with many more lines planned or under...
