Marmaray is a unique strategic infrastructure project of the 21st century. It represents a metro line passing under the Bosphorus Strait. This is the only underwater tunnel in the world connecting Europe with Asia. Marmaray in Istanbul is a connection between a surface train, an underground metro and an underwater tunnel under the Bosphorus. The length of the tunnel under the strait is 1.4 km. This is an earthquake resistant pipe buried 4.5 meters below the seabed and 60 meters below sea level! I travelled as a family of 4 with two pushchairs, she saw us struggling with the tickets and when I asked for help she just pointed in the other direction, no offer to help, no explanation, when I then received help from a stranger, I came back and now the pushchair got stuck in the barrier, this godforsaken lady not only saw this happen, but when my wife went up to her to ask for help, the lady walked into the back room.

As my first impression from the UK, I can honestly say I will never travel back if this is the best representation of your underground...

Sirkeci Marmaray İstasyonu, İstanbul’un hem tarihini hem de modern ulaşım ağını buluşturan çok kıymetli bir nokta. Tarihi Sirkeci Tren Garı ile entegre edilmiş ve bazı bölümlerinde bu tarihi doku hâlâ görülebiliyor. Ancak bu dokunun daha fazla ortaya çıkarılması, daha özenli bir restorasyon ve hikâyeleştirme ile çok daha etkileyici hâle gelebilir.

Pek çok ülkenin büyük metro ağlarında bulundum — New York, Paris ve daha birçok Avrupa ve Amerika şehri… Özellikle New York’un istasyonlarıyla kıyasladığımda, Sirkeci ve İstanbul’un genel olarak temizlik ve düzen açısından çok daha başarılı olduğunu gönül rahatlığıyla söyleyebilirim. New York’ta istasyonlar çoğu zaman izbe, karanlık ve kirli. Bu anlamda Türkiye’nin ulaşım altyapısında temizlik ve düzen konusunu gerçekten iyi yönettiğini düşünüyorum.

Marmaray’a ulaşmak için uzun bir yürüyüş gerekiyor. Bu, aslında güzel bir fırsat olabilirdi. Eğer yürüyüş güzergâhı boyunca daha fazla tarihsel unsur, sanatsal dokunuş veya İstanbul’un geçmişine dair detaylar yer alsaydı, bu mesafe insanı yormak yerine keyifli bir deneyime dönüşebilirdi. Şu anda yalnızca giriş kısmındaki merdivenlerden aşağı inerken gördüğünüz duvarlardaki birkaç dekoratif tablo bu açıdan dikkat çekiyor ve onlar gerçekten çok güzel.

Sonuç olarak, Sirkeci Marmaray İstasyonu çok merkezi ve tarihi bir yer. Bu değerin daha da parlatılması gerektiğini düşünüyorum. Umarım bir gün sadece bir ulaşım noktası değil, aynı zamanda İstanbul’un ruhunu hissettiren özel bir durak...
