Aux Merveilleux de Fred is a french patisserie that specialise in meringues and cramiques and have several international locations.
Enticed by their window display of fresh looking pastries, I entered their South Kensington branch and ordered a chocolate chip cramique; a rich sweet breakfast bread very similar to a brioche. Fortunately, I had arrived just as they had come out of the oven. The dough tasted perfectly light and buttery - the sort of delightful treat that can be enjoyed at any moment of the day.
I then decided to try one of their meringues. I opted for the Incroyable which was made of Speculos biscuit and white chocolate. It was a soft and airy meringue with a crisp exterior. Although I personally found it too sweet for my liking, it was very well made and would certainly have tempted any meringue lover. Each flavour had a quirky name like The Magnifique and The Eccentrique and they were topped with flavoured whipped creams & then dipped in various crumbles. These included white and dark chocolate flakes, coffee powder, a variety of nuts and more. They could also be purchased in pretty boxes.
Cramiques start from Ā£1.90 and meringues from Ā£1.70. They only have a limited variety of pastries but they focus on getting these two items right. I would recommend these products. And as the name āmerveilleuxā suggests, they really do...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRude, untrusting. Took the pleasure out of organising my sonās 10th birthday. Ordered a big chocolate merveilleux cake in the South Kensington shop for my sonās 10th birthday party on the evening prior. I paid upfront, since I also bought a couple waffles and I always prefer to just pay rather than test trust. She gave me no docket or anything to bring in for the cake, but then am used to being able to go pick up what Iāve paid for.
When I went in to pick the cake up the next morning as arranged and discussed, some member of staff decided I had not paid. When I politely said Iād paid, they asked to see my bank account then TWICE tried charging me for it. To leave with the cake, I had to tell them Iād be going out and returning with a police officer if they didnāt my allow me to! It was just frankly insulting to me to not be trusted like that when I really go out of any way to be, and also created an unnecessary a scene in front of all the other customers.
I subsequently returned the cake for a refund, since the entire scene stayed with me all morning and made me lose the appetite for it. I at no point even received any apology. Itās a pity that my son wonāt get the cake he wanted on his 10th birthday. But Iāve at least bought him...

The concept of meringues with whipped cream is simple but the presentation and flavours makes it very chic and appealing for those who are thinking of moving away from cupcakes and frozen yogurt. My bet is that this will be the next talk in town and hang out spot for all the fashionistas and bloggers as it fits the bill for being a fashionable and yet fun place.
The staff were delighted we had come in exploring and even offered us a tasting of their selection of coffees which was absolutely what we needed on a miserable rainy day. The Hazelnut Meringue I had was bliss, the right amount of cream and crispiness and perfectly complimented the espresso we had.
I highly recommend this to those with a sweet tooth but a key interest in discovering new places in London. I wish my office was close to here, I would be picking up a meringue every morning with some espresso to kick start a crispy...
