Today our cosmetology school had a scheduled, pre-paid tour of the Madame C.J. Walker Museum. It’s disheartening that we were unable to do the tour, as our students were super excited and had been preparing for today. We arrived to locked doors. We scheduled and pre-paid with Ricci who was not only absent, but with no logical excuse as to why he did not communicate that we would need to move our time due to his transportation issues. A simple phone call would have prevented us from bringing the students off campus to the location until a time where he could make himself present. He was very dismissive and exceedingly unprofessional as he gave us a new time of 1.5 hours later, and then called back to push us even further back, leading to us having to cancel. He seemed to not understand that we hold school hours and still had to get them back on campus for classes, which is why we scheduled the tour at a specific time to begin with. It’s a slap in the face to Madame C.J. Walker’s amazing legacy for her museum to be run so unprofessionally. While he demanded payment in advance to ensure we showed up at the designated time, he could not be bothered to do the same. I do not advise anyone to prepay for your tickets as you are not guaranteed to actually be able to tour the museum. As an educator, I do not advise patronizing because it’s sets an awful example to our future beauty professionals on how to run a business. BUTTTT this was still a teachable moment for our future professionals. When you have someone prepay for your services, being on time and present are of the upmost importance and if you can not commit to the obligation, communication is a absolute must because it can make or break how someone views or patronizes your business in the future. I personally will never schedule another field trip to this museum. 0/10 definitely would...
Read moreUpon our arrival at the museum, we paid the $7.00 entrance fee. We noticed that not everyone had arrived yet, and parking was on the street, which was not the safest option. While waiting outside, we admired the surroundings, noting the aesthetic of the building and signage, which conveyed a historic feel.
The atmosphere made the evening particularly enjoyable. The owner joined us as we honored and acknowledged the history that he and his son are preserving in the building. We played a game that awarded each student with a mini record album of their choice. As we listened to music, the owner shared the history of the area and the building. Overall, the tour was both informative and enjoyable, providing us with valuable knowledge about the history of the area...
Read moreThis place is amazing as well as the owner. It very different to other museums as it was one of Madam C J Walkers actual salons, you see her actual tools she used. The museum is also home to Werd Radio. This is the place were black activists, would communicate to the community, to help organise rallys of protest and to inform others of what they do. Ricci the owner of this brilliant place, was so welcoming, accommodating, we had young children with us and he was so relaxed teaching us history facts you won't hear nowhere else! What I love was it was a very intimate feel, capturing what it was like for the people of that time. I love the fact that Madam C J walker wanted others to...
