My husband and I began a large “remodel” project on an existing home in 2018. The project vision included turning a 1980’s traditional style house into a modern, clean lined, sleek home of our dreams. The project was a difficult one, the lot was sloped, the spaces for construction were constrained, we had very active and involved neighbors, and we backed to a golf course that was very busy 6 days a week.

The builder we chose was Melde Construction. When we met with the owner Bernie Calcote to discuss the project we had a palpable feeling that he not only “got” us, but he “got” the project and had an excitement for what it could be. It turned out we were correct in our assessment, Bernie and the Melde team were there for us every step of the way.

Our project included a team of architects, a designer, and Melde that worked together without ego to overcome each obstacle faced to deliver an amazing project. When we visited our construction project we would see the Melde sign on the gate that humbly stated, “Love your home, enjoy the journey”. Building a home in Austin Texas is not an easy journey to enjoy. It is a difficult process, but we couldn’t have found a better partner to take that journey with than Melde.

Melde set up an excellent schedule for communication and input. We received the updates we needed and were brought up to speed in real time. Our onsite project manager was Kellen Hood and he was such a great advocate for us as the home owner. He managed our project trades with great efficiency, he managed our neighbors with great care ensuring they were happy throughout the process, and he managed us as clients with humility. We never doubted that Melde had our very best interests at heart.

We completed our home in the Spring of 2020 and it turned out amazing. The home was featured on the 2021 AIA homes tour which was a fitting celebration for all the hard work that our team put into the project. As the architect for this unique and highly detailed addition, I had the opportunity to observe MELDE’s work closely throughout the project. The design posed several challenges, including its intricate architectural elements, the need for the young homeowners to live on-site during construction, and the added complexity of them expecting their first child during the process. MELDE rose to the occasion and delivered exceptional results.

Their team handled every aspect of construction with the utmost professionalism, competence, and integrity. What stood out most was their ability to balance construction progress with the homeowners' comfort and expectations—a feat that cannot be overstated. From an architectural perspective, MELDE’s attention to detail was outstanding. They translated the design vision into a beautifully executed space that now functions as a den, laundry room, and photography studio. Every material, joint, and finish was carefully considered and crafted to align with the high standards set by the design.

Our architecture studio has recently successfully competed a custom residence with the Melde team. The owner, Bernie, has created a wonderfully culture of high standards, attention to detail, and humility across his entire team. Everyone on their team is experienced and cared deeply for the project outcome.

The project manager, Kellen, had tip top communication throughout the workflow.
