On 5/27/19, I bought an adjustable Silver and zinc ring made in Turkey for $12 at a shop in Port Townsend. The owner told me she could adjust it, but after I had already purchased it, was unable to do so and told me that her husband usually did adjustments, but he was not there. On 5/28/19, I stopped in at this store and asked if the jeweler could adjust my ring. He said he could. Never having had an adjustable ring adjusted before, I was not sure what to expect. The jeweler proceeded to measure the ring, measure my finger, then quickly use his hand to squeeze my ring the tiniest bit. That is exactly how I would've done it myself if I had chosen not to bring it to a professional. I was flabbergasted when he told me the charge for doing so was $20. To add insult to injury, when I pulled out a $50 bill to pay, the jeweler made a joke suggesting I should leave all of my money with him. I take responsibility for not asking first what the charge would be, but I walked away from the interaction feeling I had been completely duped. I have since checked with a couple of friends who have had rings adjusted and they told me that they were surprised it was not done for free, but they were blown away that I was charged $20. If this is the level of customer service and transparency provided to a customer with a $12 ring, you would be a fool not to think twice before trusting him with your valuable jewelry and watches.
In addition, I would like to bring to your attention that the majority of positive Google reviews this business has received are clearly either fake and/or friends of the jeweler. Let me walk you through how to discern a fake review on Google, starting from the first review:
Larry Silva posted two five star reviews. Look at the level of detail in his first five star review. Now compare it to his review for this business. He gives it five stars, but doesn't even bother to write a single sentence. The lack of congruency between these two five star reviews indicates that Larry Silva is likely a personal friend of the jewelers. This is what a friend review looks like.
Matt Ac posted two reviews. He posted a one star review for a business he was unhappy with in Colorado Springs, which is likely where he lives full-time. Matt went into quite a bit of detail about why he was unhappy with this business. By comparison, although he gives the jeweler five star rating and states "This is the best jewelry store in Washington," provides no further detail. People rarely leave one or five star reviews without providing further detail. All indications are that Matt is also a friend of the jeweler, but clearly he is either a closer friend and/or was able to be cajoled into writing a full sentence.
Morgan Owain Morgan-Jones posted a five star review and a considerable amount of flowery text in support. To further assess his credibility, I would encourage you to read his other Google reviews, his YELP reviews, his Twitter account (0 followers) and his FB profile ( with a 30-year-old picture). This guy has a degree in BS and I'm not talking about a Bachelors of Science. I'm sure he and the jeweler are close personal friends.
Matt Lacse posts a five star review and a few sentences to back it up. He also provides enough information to indicate that he's lived in this area for a number of years. Yet, there is no trace of him on any other social media site. Google his name all you want, nothing comes up. All indications are this is a fake profile.
Chantal B. posts a five star review in a few sentences to back it up. She has posted a total of 11 Google reviews. Of those only this review and one at a nearby casino are from this geographic area. The rest are from Scottsdale, Arizona. Yet Chantel claims she's been going to this jeweler for years. Clearly, that is a lie. But the first lie Chantal told was to give this to a five star review. Chantel is a real person but she is clearly a friend of the jewelers, One that is willing to lie for him. You know what they say about birds...
Read moreI took my wedding ring here after a freak accident - catching my hand in a ceiling fan blade which bent one of the prongs on my ring and caused the stone to fall out. I found this jewelry shop via Google, having just moved to the island, and rushed down just before closing on a Thursday evening.
I can't speak much of my initial interaction with the jeweler and his associate because I was wrecked over damaging my wedding ring. It wasn't clear to me exactly what the jeweler would do to fix my ring - but I did get an estimated price for repairs and an approximate date it would be ready. "Sometime next week."
I went home and THEN started reading reviews. My God, I wish I hadn't. So many of these reviews are absolutely horrible. It's really something how much time people have on their hands trying to imply that the reviews are faked. Maybe they are? I have to ask myself why a local business that's been around since 2005 would do that? It's not like people are coming from all over the country to buy jewelry on Bainbridge Island. I digress.
Someone else said that she never received her item back from the jeweler after months on end? Naturally I went into a blind panic. My wedding ring is about as inexpensive as they come - but it is absolutely priceless to me. I was so terrified I'd never get my ring back because of that one review - which looking back is totally absurd. I hope the shop owner addresses this egregious claim.
I picked my ring up yesterday - it took a week as promised. The jeweler was incredibly friendly, which I mention because I wasn't halfway to a meltdown this time. He actually fixed my setting - the prongs weren't tailored for the stone (it's a James Allen ring) which is probably why one bent so easily. You could say "oh he pulled a fast one on you" but no, I don't believe he did. There is a noticeable difference and improvement in how the stone sits now.
I had a great experience aside from being spooked by the profoundly negative reviews here. My unsolicited advice is to take them with a few grains of salt. This business has been around for 20 years...you don't survive that long by ripping off customers and...
Read moreI would not do business with this man again. Here is why. I took a ring in for repair and was given a price of $50.00. I needed a piece of nickel silver removed and replaced with sterling as part of the ring was giving me an allergic response. I explained this carefully. When I went to pick up the ring I asked if the replaced piece was sterling. Yes, the owner assured me. Then he said the price was $59.00. I reminded him he had told me it was to be $50.00, and he said he charged me the additional for polishing. I refused to pay the additional amount. I put the ring on and within 1/2 hour the rash had returned and my finger was swollen; the nickel silver had been used again. I took the ring to the jewelry store in Poulsbo, who gave me a written estimate and completed the work as requested (for less cost). I went back to Bainbridge Diamonds and Jewelry to speak to the owner. He did not apologize or offer me any financial remuneration. He then told me that there was a guarantee on the work and I should have brought it back to him. Really? This time he said the the additional $9.00 fee had been for shipping and handling. This was the first I learned he did not do the...
