The grand seiko brand encapsulated perfectly in a boutique - I don't mean because it's a grand seiko shop, I mean everything about the experience of buying a watch from the shop is reflected in the value of a grand seiko watch compared to rolex, omega, and other similar price point and market brands.
I was interested in getting a sbga413, the "Sakura" dial spring drive watch. Something like 4 months ago I let Grand Seiko @ grand seiko dot com or some other ridiculously vague sales funnel entrance know. Within two messages and a day they put me in touch with this boutique, who answered every question I had an expressed genuine interest in why I was drawn to this watch (romantic memories of japan in sakura season, what else?). There wasn't any pushiness, the whole experience was one where they simply had solutions to my problems. Oh, you're in San Francisco? We could always just ship it to you in insured mail. Thinking of coming down? We're at this location, these hours. Worried about us selling out? Well we possibly won't, but you could always drop a refundable deposit... Etc. A calm and confident brand, with calm and confident salespeople. I was in that game, I know (or at least knew back in the day) all the tricks, these guys were as smooth as butter.
My main guy was Xavier. Dude's young so I dunno what they're doing over at grand seiko training rooms but he knows his business. Responsive, available, courteous, interested.
Coming into the shop itself was the highlight of my month, which I get is kinda depressing but covid y'all. Speaking off, they were masked up, which again is depressing that I have to point out, but LA is apparently full of crazy people that believe a pandemic is a global conspiracy or something?
Me and 4 travel partners were instantly made welcome. All I had to do was tell them my name and Xavier was already getting the watch out. I think he had it in my hands in 30 seconds flat. I hadn't even pulled the credit card out and he's saying "put it on, try it on, it's yours!" Smoooooth. The girls I were with weren't in the watch game at all but he and the other dude kept them entertained while I drooled all over the counters. It honestly just felt like hanging out. Even when another customer came in to split the staff attention, they were engaging us with each other. Grand seiko club, eh?
Casual, confident. Excellent japanese whiskey from a dixie cup to celebrate the payment going through. A patient fitting process that listened to my preferences (some people like a little dangle in their watch, not me).
No games. Afterwards we visited a couple other shops. The Panerai people were polite but aloof, the ALS shop was appointment only, hublot didn't seem to realize they were watch salespeople, rolex... Forget about it.
No waitlists. Refundable deposit to hold a watch. You see something you like, they happily take your money and give it to you. The dial work is unmatched - they make rep rolexes you couldn't ID if you had a microscope, I should know, I'd been walking into boutiques with a rep daytona for months - that'll never happen for the snowflake, sakura, and other sick dials GS is coming out with. Spring drive is unbeaten by switzerland. QA is perfect. And all that for the prices GS charges? Come on.
Anyway we had a great time, and I'm loving the new watch. It's kinda scary, I find myself browsing through their...

Read moreI had my eye on the SBGA413 for about 2-3 years after seeing one in Denver, CO. Recently, I made the trip out to Grand Seiko, Beverly Hills and pulled the trigger. The wait was entirely worth it for one aspect of this specific location. His name is Xavier Sanchez.
Not only did I get one (out of three) of my dream GS watches. But I had one of the most memorable purchasing experiences, with service that might even make the flagship boutique in Tokyo want to take notes, and perhaps they should. Xavier was attentive, not pushy, and extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of horology. One could simply sell you a watch, shake your hand, and give you a smile, but no. What came after was more great conversation, and the opportunity to try some extremely special Suntory whiskeys. Even for my girlfriend (who does not like whisky) he made freshly brewed tea, which was again, just top class service that I have never experienced in America. We chatted and sipped until I was ready to go home. I left warm and fuzzy, and I don’t think it was from the drinks.
Although my phone doesn’t really do it justice, I waited to write this review until my trip to Japan to take a picture of the 413 with the blooming cherry blossoms. As I sit here on the bullet train to Nagoya, I could not be happier with my purchase.
Thanks...
