Montana Vintage Clothing — Local services in Billings

The clothing in this store was beautiful. However, the service was sub par.

I walked in simply to look at the beautiful garments, not really intending to necessarily buy. The older woman running the shop asked if I needed assistance and I told her no. She explained to me that most of the dresses were sorted by waist size and offered to measure mine. I said no thank you as I already knew my size.

I'm looking through the dresses and holding them up to myself in the mirror. Mind you, I'm not a tiny girl, but I'm not overweight either. I'm a size 6 roughly with an hourglass figure. The woman came up to me and puts the measuring tape around my waist as I protest and, once again, tell her I already know my size. She still continues to measure.

She then tells me the dresses I'm looking at are too small (I know. I was just looking), puts back the dress I was holding up to me, and points me to dresses that are larger and comments on my "broad shoulders". She told me that dresses of that era had no spandex and therefore, no "give".

I was so unbelievably uncomfortable. I think the staff needs to take a lesson in empathy and understand that this type of treatment of customers can be offensive and triggering. I walked out of there feeling very low about my body. I did not ask for help. If I had asked for help I may have been more receptive to the opinions of this woman....

My fiancé and I stumbled upon this spot during our quick stop in Billings. We had 30 minutes before closing so we went in “just to look”… wow, I cannot express how amazing this store is. Their selection of vintage is better than 99.9% of vintage stores I’ve been in and frequently shop. Their knowledge of sizing, clothing care and all around fashion is vast and their customer service has me planning my next trip back to Billings JUST to visit them. Coming from Los Angeles and growing up in Texas, it’s rare to find such a tasteful and well priced store such as this one. I also want express how happy I am that they carry more vintage men’s clothing than most places I’ve been. Within the 40 minutes my fiancé and I quickly went through the clothes, we both found multiple pairs of paints, shoes and jackets we immediately bought. Not once did we feel rushed or pressured into buying anything, only well taken care of! Seriously some of the most attentive and best customer service I’ve experienced. I have been shopping at Montana Vintage Clothing for over ten years and it has always been a delightful experience. Sherry, the owner, is incredibly sweet, welcoming, and a wealth of knowledge when it comes to vintage. She provides an inviting experience for her customers and the staff is always personable and attentive. Making sure that you know your true waist size is helpful when it comes to searching for the right fit, as the clothes from different eras were made with different materials that are not as forgiving as modern materials used in today's fashion styles. Sherry and her staff make sure the clothing is quality by researching, cleaning, and mending the garments themselves if needed, which I have always found to be impressive. Not many retailers, let alone vintage outlets, put in as much work and energy into their stores as the friendly folks at MT Vintage. Whenever I am in Billings or just passing through, this store is always on my list of stops.
