Taking the Freedom Trail Walking Tour in Boston was easily one of the highlights of our trip. From the moment our tour guide greeted usâdressed head to toe in full colonial attire, complete with a tricorn hatâwe knew we were in for something special. It wasnât just a walk through history; it was like being part of a living museum.
The tour winds through many of Bostonâs most historic landmarks, and along the way we start at Boston Common, and stopped at other places like the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revereâs Grave, the Old South Meeting House, the spot where the Boston Massacre occurred, and other notable locations in Boston. Itâs one thing to read about these sites in a book, but itâs something else entirely to stand where it all happened and hear the stories brought to life by a passionate guide.
We learned a ton of fun factsâlike how the first female real-estte developer was able to own property in a time when women didn't dare, how the Boston Massacre unfolded right in front of the Old State House, and how people were buried in places like Coppâs Hill or the quirky habits of revolutionaries. All these stories and fun facts kept the tour fun and engaging the whole time.
Honestly, itâs rare to find a walking tour thatâs this well doneâwhere the history is told with such energy and accuracy, and the guide is clearly doing more than just reading from a script. If youâre visiting Boston and even remotely interested in American history, donât miss this tour. Itâs the perfect mix of education, entertainment, and authentic...
Read moreA wonderful and all-encompassing tour with engaging guides. Not to take anything form them, but if you like, you could do so much at your own pace by getting the basic visitor map (free in the information office) and following the "red brick road" yourself and use your Google Lens app to get the information from either the park service, Wikipedia---so sorry if the info there isn't adequately crossed-checked-- or some pre-recorded messages from sanctioned park service messaged. As for the latter, we opted to do a self-guide, as we had a special interest in the BLACK HERITAGE TRAIL which wasn't part of the guided tour when we visited. To follow, just get the free "Meet Boston" map, load up the national park service audio on the 8 sites that are park of the tour...it's mostly in the Beacon Hill area that is a side the Statehouse...and enjoy more fascinating history. We also recommend just asking people in costume any questions you might have. Boston Commons is surrounded by so many friendly guides who are so happy to fill you with facts. E.g, ask about the original site of the Boston Massacre---which isn't in the Boston Commons park. You'll be directed to the Old Customs House place where there's just a sidewalk memorial (safety and logistical reasons, I presume). All around that area (financial district) you can find professionals and volunteers who can tell you all about Crispus Attucks and the other first "victims" of the first shots fired by the British. You'll like the authenticity of mining sources for history at...
Read morePHENOMENAL!!! If you want a great guided tour of Boston, its history, and the beginnings of the Revolutionary War, then this is your thing!!
We started in Boston Common. Four of us, and our total group was about 20-25 people. Our tour guide was in period dress, tricorner hat and all. The tour is about 1 1/2 hours and about 1 1/2 miles. It is by no means a tough walk, and there is a lot of stopping so that your guide can explain the more important sites.
As weird as it may sound, the highlight of the tour to me was the Granary Cemetery. You'll be able to see the graves of Sam Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, James Otis (who?? he's really an important character in American history), and bunches of others, including Ben Franklin's parents. Our guide told us the true stories about what happened during that time period and dispelled a lot of the myths that we all have come to believe happened (Paul Revere's ride, etc.).
If you can walk for an hour and a half, DO THIS!!! It absolutely does not get any better, and...
