Astounding array of fresh Scandinavian pastries served with passion and love. Last year, when I accidentally stumbled upon their grand opening, I saw a bustling crowd inside the store, but didn’t think much of it. Their emphasis on chocolate babka seemed appealing, but I already had a reliable spot for my chocolate babka fix in NYC. Recently, I went in for the first time to try some of their pastries. They were offering free samples of their babkas, and I couldn’t resist trying as much as I could. I ended up getting a loaf of their chocolate babka, almond babka, and a spinach and cheese bureka, and Scheft’s passion for serving fresh pastries all day was certainly reflected on everything I tried. Almond marzipan wrapped around the crunchy and puffy outer layer, the almond babka was a delightful experience. Bureka also had a similar outer layer, but its warmth made a huge difference in texture and flavors. The real highlight for me was the chocolate babka. Without being too buttery or overly sweet, they managed to make a perfect loaf of blissfulness that could easily make me oblivious of all the great experiences I had with the Breads bakery in NYC. Will definitely return to try their other fruity flavored babka and croissants, and highly recommend to pastry fans who are tired of Italian or...
Read morePlace was too expensive ! Priced for tourists that visit this place.
However, as a tourist, I came inside and eyed the chocolate roll. I asked if I can get the end cut because I have always loved end cuts of any bakeries.
The roll was normally divided and partitioned into fourths. I merely wanted the 1/4 very end piece.
Server asked management of my request. Management said "NOPE". I was told that I have to get the middle 1/4 soft piece (the piece I don't eat).
Don't know what the big deal is, but a cut is a cut so why not just give the customer the fair cut they are asking and more than willing to pay for?
I left without buying anything. Place was priced on the high end anyway. Someone has to pay their high lease rental right?
You are better off elsewhere.
As for the owner who replied to my post. You own the business, therefore, your management staff is an extension of you and your company culture. A culture that is NOT customer service oriented. Because had it been, the answer to my request would have been a flat out "OF COURSE".
Therefore. When your management staff told me "NOPE", it was an extension of you. Let us not dilute the rudeness I received from your establishment under your direcr guidance in this...
Read moreWow wow wow. I finally made my way over here after getting two extremely strong recommendations from friends (who normally don't tell me about food places). This is now a must-go for me in Boston Commons.
Everything I tried here was incredible. I got the chocolate babka loaf ($16) which was absolute perfection. It was fresh and so warm, with perfect textural contrast between the crisp glazed exterior and the warm fluffy pillowy interior, and delicious chocolate filling. This is definitely the best babka I've ever had -- maybe the best sweet bread/pastry I've ever had. My friend and I destroyed this thing in one sitting. Yes, the price is a bit high, but I would rather pay to have them make it than attempt an inferior version myself (and come to terms with how much butter is inside). This babka is a dream, and eating it in the store was an unforgettable experience.
I also got the cheese stick bread ($3.75) which was everything I wanted in a savory bread - crisped up cheese, chewy soft bread, and delicious flavor. It was awesome. I also tried the bread they had out for samples -- it was so fresh and chewy and I loved it.
I'm not usually a big fan of breads but Bakey has my heart and my wallet. I...
