After wrapping up the rooms at Red Fox Escapes, their staff recommended that we check out Trapology by the Commons. We have done The Retreat and Submarine. We are excited to return and do some of their more unique room themes like Boobie Trap (18+) and Hotdog Heist. Our game master, Grace, was engaging and clear when explaining the room, and helpful along the way (for instance, without spoiling, we struggled with inputting a code and Grace let us know we had the correct answer but just needed to try again... or that we would be able to lift something that appeared heavy).
The rooms were incredibly well designed physically and aesthetically. The puzzles themselves were well thought out and an approximate difficulty level. We loved having to consistently use our entire spaces and clues. It felt more cohesive, instead of linear. This also certainly helped spread out our large group. While most escape rooms will offer to take photos for your group after you're wrapped up, we were able to take photos in the themed escape room itself and they took a photo which was emailed to folks AND printed free of charge which makes for a great souvenir!
Now for the details...
Price: $40-50 depending on whether you want a public or private room
Building/Entrance: entering Trapology is jokingly the first part of the escape room. You have to buzz in and Trapology is on the 2nd floor. You can use the stairs or the elevator. You'll check in on the second floor. Some games are on floors above and can be accessed via stairs or a very small, rectangular elevator. If you're concerned about the accessibility of a specific room, I recommend contacting them in advance before booking.
Restrooms: there are restrooms on site on all floors where there are escape rooms. Clean and well maintained
Merchandise: they have a handful of souvenirs - t shirt, a really cool keychain/bottle openers, and an enamel pin
Waiting Area: they have waiting areas inside if you arrive early or are waiting for a ride pick up. The waiting area has comfy chairs, common tabletop games, and fun decor. I wish I had taken more photos of their set up!
Transportation: For the cheapest parking, I recommend finding street parking or parking underneath the Commons. Street parking is easier to find and is free on Sundays. The area is always easily accessible by public transit
Bonus: you get a free souvenir if you make it to their leader board, which is adjusted for how big your party is. motivation!
Of note... Trapology also does outdoor escape rooms (like an outdoor guided scavenger hunt) and will mail escape...
Read moreOur group of 4 played "The Boobie Trap" (GM: Joaquin/Felix) and "The Hot Dog Heist" at the recommendation of local escape attendees. Unfortunately, our experience was a bit lackluster and disappointing.
We'll start with the pros: the practice is busy, and it's staffed well where each employee had a role and a single gamemaster is dedicated to a particular game, which is great. We had a great time with our gamemasters for "The Boobie Trap"; Joaquin and Felix were engaging, patient and we think 4 people was the perfect size for this game. These gamemasters were the redeeming factors and I would give them 5/5 stars.
The cons: we heard great things about "The Hot Dog Heist", but I truly believe the room is better equipped for maximum 6 people, and not 8. For this room, we "shared" the experience with two other groups for a total of 8 people. One the parties (we'll call them party A) "hogged" all the puzzles and took it upon themselves to steer the entire game, leaving the rest of us standing there. The other party (we'll call them party B), seemed to be new to escape games, and you could tell they were pushed to the side. At the end, the gamemaster (don't have his name) brushed us aside when it came time to take a group photo. It wasn't until a different employee (the one sitting by the elevator to check in groups) offered to take a photo for us.
With the high praise we had heard of Trapology Boston, we were left disappointment by the end of our second game, leaving more...
Read moreThe Institute at Trapology Boston is an absolute masterpiece of escape room design! From the moment we stepped in, we were immersed in a meticulously crafted experience. Our game master, Ammet, set the perfect tone with their welcoming demeanor and provided well-timed hints that kept us moving without spoiling any of the "aha" moments.
The puzzles were brilliantly challenging, striking that sweet spot between difficult enough to make you think hard and solvable enough to keep you engaged. Each solution led naturally to the next challenge, creating a smooth flow that made the hour fly by. The attention to detail in the room design and props added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience.
What really sets this room apart is how it keeps you on your toes while remaining thoroughly enjoyable. Even when we were stuck, the frustration was the good kind that makes solving the puzzle even more satisfying. Ammet's expertise in guiding us through the experience while letting us discover solutions on our own was particularly impressive.
If you're looking for an escape room that will challenge your mind while keeping you thoroughly entertained, The Institute is a must-try. It's clear why Trapology Boston has such a stellar reputation in the escape room community. Worth every minute and...
