Giant Food — Local services in Bowie

Today was one of the worst experiences I've had at this Giant grocery store on Annapolis Road. Upon completing my grocery purphase and heading toward the exit of the self checkout, my cart was forcibly stopped by an Giant employee named Anthony, an older bald african american man. Let me preface this with, this isnt the first time Anthony has harrassed me in the self checkout line. He looked in my cart and asked if I was going to pay for my cases of water separately. Confused, I replied I had already paid as you can simply look up the item and press button to add it to your purchases. Clearly Anthony didn't know that feature or he did and just assumed I was stealing. He then asked for my receipt saw that I paid and threw the receipt in the cart. As he did so he said with a chuckle, ; " it must be the way you look." I'm african american with locs, I present younger than I actually am. I asked him what he said and he doubled down and said it again. Shocked at the blantant admission of racial profiling I then asked to speak to the manager and told him what happened.

Unfortunately, I believe nothing will happen as Anthony seemed very comfortable profiling me while a younger fairer skinned demographic next to me went on about their day with no issues...

i’ve fairly new to the area, been here since 2021. it’s a good area to live in. my neighbors and i have been giving each other time to adjust to our new environments, we’ve been outstanding progress. we’ve been working on making our neighborhood safe. my dog and i are emotional support for each other, had her since 2016. i was 14 years old, she was born in our household and she’s a Boston Terrier mixed with Jack Russell. She is very, extremely talented and smart. to sum it all up, Bowie is so slowly becoming unsafe for newer residents, especially latinos. i was in this Giant a few days back getting a few snacks for my sister, we were having fun. we came a cross a few black men, never had a problem with anyone at this giant everyone has been super sweet. but i can no longer come to this Giant, it’s not safe for people like. it’s 2021, the oppressed SHOULD NOT and CAN NOT be the oppressors. please don’t forget we are and were welcomed to this country in a very brutal and ignorant manner. change yourself stop taking out your own problems out on people who just want to enjoy...

The self checkout experience is demeaning and ruins the entire shopping experience.

There are no bags anywhere in the self checkout. You scan an item, and the system forces you to place the item in the bagging area. Where there are no bags.

The reason there are no bags is not because they are out. It is because Giant Food management has decided that they would like you, an adult and supposedly a valued customer, to ask the self checkout attendant for permission to have a bag for the groceries that you are paying them so much money for.

Their response to prior reviews that report displeasure at this issue demonstrates a clear indifference to the customer's experience.

Given that the last thing we need is to be demeaned when providing Giant Food such a profit for buying our groceries, I would recommend taking your money to the Harris Teeter across the street, or the Aldi in the next shopping...
