Ridiculous. Stepping into L.A. Burdick in Brookline (not my first time, at other locations), you might expect a quiet luxury akin to a high-end patisserie—something worthy of its $10-a-cup hot chocolate price tag. Instead, what you find is a near-theatrical production: an assembly line of 8 employees fussing over a single drink, as if a Michelin-starred chef’s brigade had been tasked with plating a solitary truffle.
Too Rich. Granted, the chocolate is rich and complex, but it borders on excess. With about 100 grams of pure chocolate in one serving, the resulting drink feels less like a comforting indulgence and more like a jittery, over-the-top injection of sweetness that leaves you restless. For all the pomp, the shop’s execution doesn’t justify the premium; it’s like paying for a five-star tasting menu only to feel uncomfortably stuffed after the first course. The careful choreography and elegant branding fall flat when the final product leaves you questioning if the experience was worth the high price—rich in flavor, yes, but ultimately short on true...
Read moreI really wanted to love L.A. Burdick because of all the hype that it's getting on social media. I stopped in after an appointment as a little treat for myself. Walked in about an hour and thirty minutes after opening, and I felt so unwelcome. The vibe was just off. I was going to grab a cup of hot chocolate, but I wanted to grab some packs of chocolate treats too. It felt like I was being watched like a hawk while looking at the different types. I decided to not sit for a hot chocolate due to the unwelcoming feeling. The person who checked me out seemed annoyed that I didn't want to wrap up the chocolate I bought in wrapping paper and that I wanted to use my bag I had with me. And, if I'm being honest, the chocolates I bought just aren't that good. I expect better for how much I paid. I hope I just had an outlier experience. I may try the Back Bay location to see if the vibe and customer...
Read moreAs a hot chocolate enthusiast, I can confidently say that L.A. Burdick's hot chocolate is truly unmatched. In addition to their phenomenal hot chocolate, the chocolates and desserts they offer are equally exceptional. Having visited their other locations around the Boston area, I was thrilled when they opened a new one just a stone's throw from my home.
The new space is stunning, with plenty of seating and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff is equally wonderful—attentive, knowledgeable, and passionate about their craft. I was fortunate enough to meet the head chocolatier on opening day, which was a highlight of my visit.
If you’re in the area, a visit to L.A. Burdick is a must. Whether you're a true connoisseur of fine chocolate or just in search of a luxurious treat, this place will exceed every expectation. It’s a spot I return to again and again, and I cannot recommend it...
