!Date: 08/12/2023 Product Name: "TONKOTSU RAMEN" Location: MAGURO Sushi Thai Ramen, 1335 Beacon St, Brookline, MA 02446 Price: $14.95 USD rating: 2-3/10; terrible notes: Visually the ramen looks stunning. But as soon as I put my spoon into the soup, that image shattered. I was hit by a strong taste that reminded me of pickled pigs feet. In attempt to clear that taste I tried other parts of the dish in hopes of washing it away. I reached for the woodear mushrooms and was hit with another strong taste, sesame oil. Ditto for the bean sprouts. But there good parts to this ramen besides its appearance. The egg was amazing though, perfectly jammy along with a round flavor of soy sauce and sweetness. The chasiu was great tender and nothing to complain about. The noodles were fine/standard(alike those noodles you buy in the cold section of a supermarket) too, a bit of a chew (just enough of a bite). Now the soup, as I commented before it was not the best due to its bold pickling taste. But after scooping from the opposite side I noticed it was not the soup but rather the bamboo shoot that created this flavor. The soup was fine/average.but the bamboos were cover in this bold flavor as it should(its bamboo shoots),ultimately leading to the downfall of this soup. As after mixing this soup around Ive noticed at the whole soup had become corrupted with this bamboo shoots flavor. In attempted of getting rid of this flavor, I've added their spicy powder. While it did not remove the strong flavor of the bamboo shoots, it did give a nice burn after drinking the soup. While I am thankful for the meal, I am just disappointed. I was even planning to order two ramens at the start but I am thankful my friend stopped me. But for the price of ramen its reasonable just not something Ill praise to others about or ever order again.I would suggest going for another dish on their menu like their sushi and spicy basil dish. And do not go for their dons.(went with friends)
Tl;dr: reasonably priced ramen that doesnt taste the best, better off order another dish instead(hear praise of the sushi and...
Read moreFirst impression: Great service!! When you walked into a restaurant 25 minutes before closing on a Saturday, you will know if they have great service. Everyone was very friendly even all the patrons have left. We ordered almost immediately and then finish as fast as we can but the servers still come and chat with us. It was impressive.
Chirashi/Hokkaido don: The fish was fresh but what impressed me most with my Hokkaido don was that they fried the shrimp head. If you have been to many popular and authentic (Japanese run) Japanese restaurant, you will noticed often, they just serve the shrimp and the head as decoration. Some knows what they are doing and deep fried the head. It was delicious. Yes, crispy enough that you have to finish the whole head! The uni was also very fresh. I just came back from Japan few months ago in Sapporo. Was having my Kaisen experience at 二条市場, the fish market in Sapporo. And Maguro's uni was as good!! And there were 4-5 pieces of scallop which was fresh and delicious. Only thing is, I'd prefer thicker than numbers. The texture is different. The squid deserves a shout out. Japanese master sushi chef will cut it nicely but still a piece of squid, they did it so beautifully here at Maguro. Just check out the pictures.
The Foie gras was a delightful surprise. The sauce it uses was very tasty, I like this fusion idea.
We finished with the mango sticky rice. Mango was excellent... Set but with a tint of sourness, along with the coconut cream (with condense milk I think), it's perfectly blend together.
Sushi rice in the Hokkaido don... It's warm! I know many places made them warm as well but not everywhere and the taste was perfect. Not too much sugar and vinegar just the right balance.
The funny thing is I was so enticed with the Thai dishes I almost ordered basil fried rice and some other Thai dishes. That'll be the next time.
Frankly, I'd give a 4 stars since it's my first time here but with the great service, it deserves an extra pat...
Read moreI’m so happy Maguro opened up here bc it’s such a breath of fresh air with restaurants here. The atmosphere when you walk in is fun and exciting with really cool art along the walls. My fiancé and I kind of just went here on a whim when she said how Curry House had closed down there was a new restaurant, eager to try it we decided to go. We started off with the crab Rangoon and the avocado spring rolls. My fiancé and I LOVE LOVE LOVE crab Rangoon and have been searching for the perfect crab Rangoon and we have finally struck gold. It was perfectly filled, and perfectly crispy. The avocado rolls were such an amazing pairing with the deep fried egg rolls as they were much lighter. We also got the Minions sushi roll and it was incredible (picture not shown). Next our main course, the mango fried rice and the pad see you. The pad see you was excellent, when it arrived it was still steaming it was so hot. On the contrary of the pad see you, the mango fried rice was not what we had expected and was extremely underwhelming for how much of a hot streak the rest of the meal was/ has been. The shrimp did not feel like high quality, and had a fishy taste and the rice was bland. The part that was a little confusing was that there were there wasn’t an indication it would be with curry powder because the pineapple fried rice said: “with curry powder” and we weren’t looking for one with curry powder. Strange and wasn’t what I was expecting. Moving on to dessert, we got the fried ice cream and it was extremely underwhelming as it was almost all batter and very little ice cream. The batter/ outer layer felt very dry almost. I wouldn’t recommend it. Overall, it was a great experience and...
