My family and I spent this past weekend at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Brunswick. The hotel stay was great, but our dining experience at Millhouse was not.
We ate there three times this weekend. On Saturday we were assigned a server that was brand new and did not know much about the menu or anything else but we got through that. On Saturday night we arrived about 9 o’clock and it appeared they we’re not happy to see guests arriving at all. There were two people at the entrance that seat the guests that seemed very cold. They went after the manager, Keith Weddle and he came out and told us it was going to be a while. They had closed off the whole left side of the restaurant and all the other guests were crowded into the right side and he explained to us it was going to be 15-20 minutes before we could get a table because he only had two servers. When we inquired why he only had two servers on a Saturday night he said it was because it had been slow earlier in the day and he had sent everyone home but those two. I’m not in the restaurant business but it would seem to me that Saturday night would probably be your busiest night of the week. Why on earth would you send all of your servers home before 9 o’clock but two?
On Sunday morning around 9:00 we went down again for breakfast. I laid the kids vouchers on the table, we all ordered, had breakfast and when they brought the bill they charged us adult prices for the kids meals. I explained to them that the kids eat free and I had the vouchers in my hand and they said even though the kids are supposed to eat free, we ordered off of the wrong menu. But there is only one breakfast menu and they confirmed that. The kids ordered the same thing Sat & Sun. They ate free on Sat morning but were charged as adults on Sunday. We asked to speak with the manager and he said the best he could do, although it was their mistake, was take $3.50 off of each child’s meal, which still left each meal $5.50 each. So the children did not eat free after all.
As we were waiting on a table on Sunday morning, 3 different families cashed out, and as they were leaving told us we may want to reconsider and go elsewhere. Now we know why.
Needless to say, the restaurant attached to your hotel is a disaster and is making the hotel look bad, because a lot of people don’t know that the two are not affiliated with each other. We have decided that we will not be back. But before others have the same bad experience we had, I would advise needed changes be made immediately.

Read moreHere's the deal. I don't want to call this place typical in any respects, but the bar and location carry the place. It is the easiest place to go if you are at a number of hotels in a small freeway setting. The decor is trying to get out of the '80s but it is a contract restaurant attached to a hotel...not much they can do. The bar is great, the food, in all fairness, is all over the place. I'd venture a guess that the size of the menu is the culprit. They should scale it back and do a much more limited menu very well. So the challenge is to find the good amongst the hopeless. Appetizers are good, my fish was good, but everything else was barely average. The bread is commercial restaurant fare tossed in the oven to make it 'home baked'. Butters and oil are not high quality, and I shouldn't even mention rice pilaf (it came with the meal). The service was very good. All in all? They are trying to be more than they really are, but if you are at one of the hotels and don't want to drive anywhere, this is okay. Have a few drinks, some appetizers and...
