Horrible place to shop !!!!!!! Some ignorant 18 or 20 year old male salesperson called the police telling them I was stuffing their merchandise in my bags. When in fact, I was putting a large amount of their merchandise I had spent over an hour selecting into a small store shopping basket that same kid had provided me with. Anyhow, I happily and voluntarily let the police see everything in my shopping bags from nearby stores with receipts and all, plus let them check out some personal items I have always carried with me when traveling. Long story short, I had none of their merchandise in my bags, but was still not allowed to purchase the $275+ worth of merchandise I had picked out and put in the store shopping basket ( not my bags), plus banned from the store. I had shopped in that store many times before on previous trips to Charleston with bags in hand from other shops a few doors away and bags from the Charleston City Market across the street from them. Parking is super hard to find in that downtown area due to so many tourists and tons of local workers, so I end up parked about a mile away. I've been back to Charleston twice since then, and I'm pretty sure that stupid kid still works there. I buy from the exact same 5 or 6 vendors at the Charleston City Market (all of whom give me discounts without me even asking because I am a regular repeat customer and I buy a lot of merchandise from them), and shop at the exact same 6 or 7 shops downtown every time I visit Charleston. All of those other shops are fun to do business with, the owners/workers always ask me about my work, how long I'm visiting and I guess remember me because I buy a lot from them too every time I'm in town. Apparently, the Five and Dime doesn't want any repeat business or anyone shopping in their store who actually goes on vacation with plenty of very hard-earned money to do a lot of shopping. Well, that disgusting incident gave me an extra $300 after taxes which I would have paid on the merchandise I had planned on buying there. The City Market Vendors and other shops I buy from were thrilled to get extra business from me. When my week long trip to Charleston, SC was over, I had spent about $3200 dollars at various shops and City Market Vendors downtown, not; including meals and lodging. Not at all bragging. I work 6-7 night shifts a week at my job, a lot of overtime and all of the holidays and weekends, so I never get time to shop when I'm home. So I shop for my whole family, closest friends, special coworkers and employees and myself when I am on vacation. Xmas and birthday gifts...
As far as I am concerned, I wish I had never done one cent of business over the years in this shop, including right after the COVID 19 shutdowns or any other Five and Dime General Store for that matter. They never deserved my business. I will stick to the old tried and true City Market vendors and shops that know and recognize me and treat me very well (as an appreciation for my repeated business...
Read moreI stopped into the Five and Dime, Charleston, on 10/19/23 at 5:40 pm. The choices of souvenirs were great. I took my choice to the register, to the right of the front main entrance. A young black girl with long braids stood up from her seat, where she was looking at her phone with ear pods in. She did not look at me, nor say a word to me until she told me my total of $6 and some change. I put one dollar bills on the counter. She asked, rudely, "is that seven", and I said yes. She picked up the bills and put them into the register. I told her to put the change/coins into the little bowl of coins by the register. She threw the coins into the bowl so hard that some of them popped up flying past my head and landing on the floor. She did not say ONE word. She returned to her seat and her phone. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED SO RUDELY BY ANYONE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!! I wish that I had sought out another employee and asked for the manager or a number. This young woman should not be allowed to continue in her position. She does not deserve this or any...
Read moreGave the stars for the employees that work there, missed out on one because of the head people there. I’m guessing it’s their manager but you can tell that he doesn’t care about them. I know when it floods and the people that drive cars can’t get there but that’s their fault? That’s a problem in my opinion.. listen to your employees!! Yanno how a lot of places were/are closing because not enough employees & how employees wouldn’t come in because of not enough pay and also mistreatment at work, well that may happen here. I know how it is so when I see it, it’s just a shame. Maybe it’s just my opinion but the employees need treated better & they need some credit for keeping the workplace how it’s supposed to. And listen it’s downtown, places can close for just a lil bit so people don’t have to worry about messing up their car or how they’re going to get to...
