UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW: Because we had so much fun at the first class we took we decided to do another. It's such a nice activity for us to do as a family. Or so I thought. Today's class was so terrible. And when I compare it to the first class we took it's even worse than that. It wasn't a full class. There were only 8 of us but our table of 4 got half of the things to work on and do as the other table of 4. So we ended standing around most of the time. I was there to have a nice Saturday morning, spend time with my family while we learned to make croissants together. I expected, as with the first class we took, that it would be fun and informational, while we worked together. This time the instructor was not very engaging, and she seemed to not really appreciate or like that my teenage son was participating and was excited to do everything. I found that especially odd as she told us that she used to be a teacher. I also can't understand why she gave the other table much more to do and work on than our table. It got to the point where it felt unprofessional. We all paid the same amount and we were no more or less capable than the other table of 4. We spent $267 for three of us to stand around for over two hours vs. actually doing much or learning anything. I would not recommend this class to anyone. This class was the croissant class. It was not good and it was not fun. The first class we took was French baking and we made crepes, tarte tatin and chocolate pot de creme and we all got to work on everything. It was very inclusive. The instructor and content was much better in that class. What I have learned today is that the instructors make all the difference. That said I would never know which was going to be good vs not good. I think this is probably our last cooking class at Sur La Table. That is way too much money to spend to stand around the majority of the time. My first class was a hit with me and my family but I am changing my star rating based on today's experience down to a 1. I can no longer recommend this activity at this location. We were just so disappointed.
My family did a cooking class today and had such a good time together. Our instructor was great and very informative in her class instruction. I’m a fairly accomplished cook/baker but my husband and son are both more novices and we all had fun cooking and learning together. The staff working in the store was also very pleasant and helpful. I’d recommend this store and a cooking class to anyone. Thanks for a...
Read moreI recently booked a cooking class here and was very excited for this. First the cooking classes are located in the back room of the store. The store has anything and everything you may want for your kitchen and cooking. Most of it in my opinion based on online retailers is overpriced. Upon arrival they call you back and ask everyone to was their hands. After you find your spot. Well it was just me and 1 other person and split everyone into 4 groups, that means you may be sharing your cook with another party, I was not a fan of this because you don't know if you will get along or not and cohesively creating a dish you need that and good communication. The other party we were with were annoyed by this too as I think they were on a date and didn't want a kid and adult interrupting that. I understand the kid was excited and a bit annoying but he's a kid. It is kid friendly but you do have to be 14. The chef went over some cutting skills and a few other tips for the dish. We had a great menu, New York strip steak, Ratatouille and creme brulee. First we cut up all the items for the Ratatouille, then cooked it that took a while, we were given a small break to look around the store or go get a bottle of wine from somewhere I tried Brio but that was a lost cause, no one was even at the bar. Then we got to use a blowtorch to caramelize the sugar on the creme brulee. This was cool. Then we seared our steaks after it was all plated we ate you do eat standing up. Best part no cleanup. I would definitely do it again but hopefully with 2 more people I know and like the whole sharing food and cooking with strangers just dampened the experience for me. As far as parking there is free parking at the mall. The experience is not cheap but pretty fun. I would recommend trying it. Read moreThis review is mainly for a cooking class we took at this location, not for the store in general.
I booked a cooking class (salad, steak,. Potatoes) at sur la table for a large group as something fun to do before the holidays. We called ahead and asked if we could be grouped together (there were seven of us and the site has mentioned groups of four).
When we arrived, we were shocked at the lack of instruction. Our group had been separated and the chef stood in the middle of the room and barked orders without explanation (season the steak, cut potato into matchsticks, etc). With four to a group, there weren't even enough tasks for everyone to be busy.
Instructors lacked key components to direct the class and even ended up failing some of our class creations. We had a chocolate mousse that the eggs had been so overwhipped, the dessert wouldn't mix!
Instructors wouldn't hesitate to yell at the class. Talking too loudly, completing tasks incorrectly (even though they gave no instruction!!)
The class was an odd mix of beginner level cooking techniques and expecting each person to already know how to make each dish.
Class didn't have correct equipment for what we were preparing. Two of our group members were expected to deseed a pear with a chef's knife. When we asked for a paring knife, the request was denied. All of the cooking was done on a heavily used camping stove. Ours wasn't level, nor did it work well.
Class would have been okay at $15 pp. Save your money. Not a fun and...
