I ended up at the Sterling Pony after spending the entire day trekking across Rocky Mountain National Park. My rental car had broken down, but my Uber driver assured me there was a shuttle that took park members throughout the park. They did not have the shuttle running, as it was the middle of October and tourist season was over. Undeterred, I was able to hitchhike throughout the park before realizing that it was getting dark, no Ubers were in the area, and my phone was dying. Also, I worry about bears. Not that I saw any…I am just always prepared for bears.
I managed to walk the two miles from the park entrance to Estes Park with 2% battery on my phone and no way to get back to my Airbnb in Lyons. I entered the Sterling Pony, because I like to look at shiny pretty things when I am stressed, and asked Christy behind the counter if the town has a taxi service. Not only did she organize a personal taxi for me to get back to my Airbnb, she offered me her phone charger and gave me an informational talk about the dangers of hitchiking and the likelihood of getting murdered/hacked up into little pieces by serial killers.
