I've lived near and have been shopping at Hilyard Street Market for 15 years now. Really liked it before the new owner and now that he's taken over, he's making HUGE improvements on an already outstanding neighborhood market. More space, more shelving, more products... all sorely needed and well appreciated. GREAT job on that! That said, I went in there tonight to get some spaghetti and one of the employees was not wearing a mask for COVID, against the Governor's orders regarding this put into place last week. When I asked about it, they got defensive and said the owner is giving the employees permission to choose to abide by this Governor's Order regarding Public Health and Safety or not. All the employees there are College Children and, given the fact that that demographic is one of the ones most rising now in cases and that many College Children aren't wearing masks in general, this makes it a very dangerous situation to put their customers in. Especially given that I am in 3 High Risk groups for catching this horrible virus. They ended up kicking me out and banning me, moving forward, after I told them I was not shopping there anymore due to my health concerns and their dangerous skirting of this Public Health Order. I'm reporting them to OSHA, on advice from the police, and reported it to KVAL's tipline, as well. And on another personal note, these guys work so hard here to keep this place looking good feeling friendly and keeping everything in inventory that we all need in this neighborhood and this neighborhood is very rough. The fact that these dedicated employees still make what they make and come here and have a smile And have a good attitude is nothing...
   Read morethis was great little store when i lived in the university area around 2003/4. the walk in beer cooler near the back was probably the best part as they had a large variety of single beers, imports, microbrews, etc... many that i've never seen before. plus they had the cardboard six pack containers so you could make your own six pack from the selection. they also had the standard selection of beer in the middle of the store. there was also a deli @ the time and i would occasionally get a sandwich and mac salad, or something. friendly...
