I came to this salon because I liked that they offered nontoxic hair color. This review is not to bash but to speak to MY experience with this salon. I had a consultation with Jessie about coloring my hair and when she asked what my ultimate goal was it was to maintain the health of my hair as well as my curls. When we discussed color she stated she would be using 20 volume for the color I chose for the roots and 10 volume for the ends. There was never any mention of BLEACH. In all my history of getting hair color when bleach is used the stylist basically gets consent and makes sure there’s an understanding it’s being used as it can be damaging especially for my hair type. When I came for the actual appointment she then stated she would be using 30 volume and 10 for the bottom. Still no mention of BLEACH to my ALREADY LIGHT HAIR. When I came into this salon I had a FULL , BEAUTIFUL, THICK AFRO. When Jessie was basically done the highlights of my hair I realized she was using bleach. I had asked her about it and stated I didn’t know she was going to be using this. She stated the bleach they use isn’t as harsh as it only swells the hair shaft and doesn’t “burst” it open like other bleaches. This still bothered me as I would have NEVER AGREED to bleach, but at this point she’s damn near done. When I got my hair blow dried it was decent enough to leave the salon but my roots and edges were still puffy, so I did have to go home and style it myself. As much as I paid I shouldn’t have had to leave and fix my hair. I do understand I have textured hair and not everyone knows how to style this hair type. The hair color did come out pretty, but it was lighter than I wanted. Jessie was agreeable to color it darker at a later date, but once I washed my hair and saw how much was coming out, I opted out of doing anything else to it. This was the start of my hair being completely ruined. My hair continued to fall out / shed ridiculously. I went to a stylist who specializes in my texture and she was perplexed on why bleach was used and why it was in my hair for as long as it was (at least 20 minutes) everywhere where Jessie put the highlights my hair was broken off or thinned. Completely RUINED. While the salon did try to work with me to find a resolution, nothing can change the fact that I had to chop all my hair off. That was the only solution to irreversible damage that was caused. Jessie tried to say I came in with damaged hair which is not true! They also stated some textures don’t respond well to the color. Excuses and little accountability. If this is the case why not do your due diligence as a stylist and do a strand test ? If my hair was supposedly damaged why agree to color it and damage it more ? My hair was just fine before I came in there. The stylist I regularly go to can speak to the health of my hair prior to all of this and she is just as upset as I am they ruined my hair. Nice beautiful curls and FULL hair. It is now thinned , curls are completely loose and straight. Just ruined. Everyone in the salon is nice and welcoming and I do appreciate that they tried to find a resolution but I’m completely traumatized at this experience and the fact that I have to “start over” by cutting my hair off. The mark was totally...
Read moreI wish I could leave a more positive review, but I have tried a Deva cut here before that I didn't like the unevenness of afterward, a dry cut that was also wildly uneven I didn't like, and I thought I'd try them again to see if they could do a good regular haircut without randomly snipping at my hair, even it out and blend my layers, but sadly no. I'm starting to wonder if they can do regular hair cuts at all? The service was super nice and friendly though, and they do try to please and treat you well, but the outcome for me was disappointing. When the stylist was cutting, I told her I didn't want a deva style cut, or random snipping at my hair kind of cut, I even politely told her it was making me nervous that she was cutting my hair like that when she started, but she brushed off my concern and kept doing it, telling me it would work out and it would look good when done. She noticed that my hair was uneven, shorter on the left side than the right side, and she would even it out so both sides are the same. Now it's flipped, and the right side is shorter than the left, and with how short it's gotten, I have to wait a few months for it to grow out enough to fix that. They offered two weeks to come back for a fix, but I don't trust her style of cutting now. It's frustrating and upsetting how little stylists listen to me when I tell them what I want and don't want, and they do what they want anyway... not the first time it's happened to me, and sadly probably not the last... story of my life. I wanted to have a good experience, but I'm afraid it was not...
Read moreThis is a place that specializes in curly hair, though they cut all types of hair, as well as men's hair. I've seen great men's cuts there! Being trained for curly hair means they are more highly trained and have better understanding of all hair types than other hair dressers.
I see Nicole, exclusively, who has had to color &cut correct my hair twice now when I've been foolish and impatient (I didn't make my appointments in a runneth fashion) enough to go elsewhere. She's an excellent colorist, and I don't throw that praise around lightly, if ever. Personal Expressions uses gentle, organic, vegan hair color which, amazingly, works beautifully! While there, I have seen other fabulous curly and straight cuts and color from the other stylists too.
I have also observed only friendliness and consideration on behalf of every stylist. If someone is unhappy, which is rare, PE will go out of their way to fix any issue without any unprofessional hullabaloo. While it's on the higher end financially, it's on par with salons which are supposed to be the best. I think it's worth saving up, skipping a month or so elsewhere, if necessary, to go to Personal Expressions.
Whilst I have had the pleasure of going there only a few times, my daughter, another very curly haired woman, has been going there for years, and her hair has never looked better!
We like this salon so much that when we move to New Hampshire, we're going to come back here to have our hair done.
You can trust you'll get what you want, and likely better than that, at Personal...
