Iāve been a loyal customer of this store for years, but my recent experience was extremely disappointing, mainly due to the behavior of one cashier, Mary.
When my 7-year-old daughter and I entered the store, we werenāt greeted by anyone. We browsed the store for quite some time and when we were ready we walked up to the checkout counter. Several registers were empty, with what seemed like no cashiers in sight. Again, at this point, we were still not greeted. At the register I approached, I noticed a sign on the scanner. Since this store used to be all self-checkout, I assumed the sign had been misplaced and began scanning my items.
Out of nowhere, a woman suddenly shouted across the store, āIāll be right there.ā At first, I didnāt even realize she was speaking to me. I turned around to look at who was shouting and noticed an older Women further down the counter, she was wearing a plain t-shirt, had her back turned toward me. Not knowing who was shouting I continued to scan my items, when she raised her voice a second time, then it became clear she was talking to me. I stopped and directed a greeting to her, āoh good afternoon,ā and asked if she was really addressing me that way, and she simply nodded and repeated herself āIāll be right thereā..
Mary, if you are reading this: your tone and demeanor were not just rudeāthey were disrespectful. I was taken aback, and even my young daughter was unsettled by the way you spoke to me. At your age and stage of life, you should be setting an example of patience, courtesy, and professionalism for both younger coworkers and the customers you serve. Instead, your behavior showed a lack of basic respect and made what should have been a fun, simple shopping trip experience for my young daughter and I into an unnecessarily uncomfortable one.
Another cashier/team member came over, cancelled my transaction, and began to rescan every item. The inefficiency was frustrating, but the greater issue is the way I was treated in front of my child. No customerāespecially with a child presentāshould ever feel embarrassed or spoken to in such a dismissive manner.
This was a disappointing experience that I hope the store addresses quickly. Courtesy costs nothing, and a little kindness goes a long way.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst I would like to say if the intention was to never actually self checkout then maybe the design should have never been changed to such. I went into the store in Hamilton Marketplace with my son on Sunday 8/3. We walked around the store multiple times because my son is autistic and we changed our mind on a few things. Once we finally made our way to check out, i observed a white couple checking out but the register next to them was open so i walked up to the open register. The associate was on the opposite side of the area but once i began to check out, she walked over to my station and snatched the two books which were the only items i had to purchase and began my transaction for me. So i asked are we not able to scan our own items which i watched the previous couple before me do, she immediately answers āno, cash or cardā seemingly irritated. Me immediately recognizing what this was, i told her she could cancel this. This wouldnāt have been an issue had she āhelpedā the previous couple or even stated to me what she was doing. It was totally unnecessary and honestly embarrassing. I donāt come to 5below often but she could have offered to take me at her original station or something but her attitude...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreStore had been remodel since the last time I had been there so I had to ask for assistance which personnel pointed me to the direction I needed to go. I had just let the area she was sending me to and didn't see what I was looking for that's why I asked. I was alittle upset but a young man came over to me and said he was sent to assist me. I explained to him what I was looking for which was on a top shelf that's why I didn't see it. He got the ladder to get it for me and explained that the person I asked for help wasn't being rude but she needed to be upfront. When I got to the checkout lane I was having some difficulties being that it was self checkout so I needed assistance again. The person upfront had to keep cleaning registers before the next customer could use it but she was trying to assist me and others so the young man came back to help me. The 1st personnel apologized and explained to me why she couldn't help me which made me give the 5 stars. I have a disability which sometimes I have to ask for assistance and the 2 employees that I encounter today made sure I had everything I needed. Keep up the...
